I just tried to play NAM

Post by Graf Zahl »

I didn't really know what to expect and the first level looked at least half decent, but the further it went on the worse it got. After that first level it was 3 levels entirely consisting out of "Jungle", meaning a bunch of trees and enemies that have perfect aim but due to all the grass and other view obstructing crap couldn't be seen - aside from that the levels felt like rail-shooters, a totally linear and uninvolving path to all that sameness. And the last two levels in the first episode have to go down as some of the most obtuse things I've ever seen, the first one doesn't even look like it's completable without cheating, with the 7th map I ended up totally lost without any idea how to finish. After that I didn't even try the second episode, the first level already looks like more of the same crap.

All in all, I have seen my share of bad FPS's but this one definitely takes the cake as the worst level design I've even seen in a commercial game, it's utter garbage. So my expectations for WW2GI have just been lowered to around nothing...

I actually played NAM when it was still just a downloadable amateur TC for Duke Nukem called Platoon. It was converted to a full game but, from what I remember of my first playthrough of the TC, it didn't really change that much.

As an amateur TC it wasn't bad (but definitely has all of the flaws that you mention). To me, however, it never really felt good enough to be a commercial release.

It doesn't help that the graphics still are largely based off the Duke3D ones, making it hardly feel like a new game. By comparison, the WW2GI graphics (except the interface) at least give the impression that they were made from scratch rather than being slightly retouched duke3d graphics.

Regarding war scenarios, I'd rather play Enjay's Operation Overlord and Burghead mods again - they are infinitely better than these two games which suffer badly from the weak monster AI of the DN3D engine. WW2GI seems a bit better than NAM, but its major problem is the same. Only machine gunning hitscan enemies that barely move and an overally ridiculous difficulty level thanks to all the hitscanners.

Oh Graf, if you "liked" NAM, i just can't wait for you to play the Quest series: Quest for Hussein and Quest for Al-Qaeda.

(although i first played these games back in 2004 when i was still stuck with my old 486 that was about to die and i have some fond memories of them, as bad as they are).

And that's not even mentioning Al-Qaeda's very own texture-swap spinoff, Night of Bush Capturing!

Why do you know that this thing exists?

Lesson of the day: War is [censored word]. I'd rather fight aliens and demons.

That's arcadey enough to be playable.

NAM also took a ton of textures from other games. I compiled a small album of tiles taken from other games here https://imgur.com/a/K4JtR1x

Most notably Duke3D itself, from what I've seen. Some of the later levels actually look like they could've been made in Duke3D directly.

I didn't even bother including Duke3D tiles because there are so many of those.
