DUSK for mac OS X just shows a black screen

Post by Memes4LyfeLives »

whenever i load up dusk on my mac, i only get a blank screen with a mouse cursor. i hear music, but i can't click on anything because the entire screen is black. i can still swipe multiple fingers across the mouse sideways to exit the window, and i can still exit out. so what's the problem? is my mac not compatible?

i'm using steam BTW.

What hardware is in your Mac? Did you check the system requirements?

(edit) Also, have you tried asking in the official Community Hub on Steam? I don't think the Dusk devs go here.

3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 4 GB of memory, and an NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB.

do these meet the system requirements? if so, what could the problem be?

I don't know, what does the Steam store page say the requirements are? I should stress that i am not a Dusk Dev and have no connection to them.

if it's catalina, then get used to a lot of things being broken/not working because of apple's new development policies / lack of 32-bit compatibility. :(

Click on the apple in the menu bar and open the first item "about this Mac", there you get a popup telling you what you need.

Catalina needs a better system than the one at use here, the hardware looks 10 years old which has long been un-supported by Apple.

I don't think you'll have much better luck with that. You're below the minimum specs there, too.

Your mac is just as old as mine. I'm surprised you can even run Steam on it at all.

The cold hard truth is: You need to buy a new computer. And to be quite honest, I would not go Apple at all, because the company lately seems to be trying to turn the platform into nothing more than an iOS development platform.

Even for that it's pure shit. Those CrapBooks overheat so fast that after a few extended compile sessions it's no longer possible to work comfortably because they get slow.
And you can get a notebook for half the price Apple charges for their underpowered clunkers that comes with decent specs.

I would also, kinda, recommend against Apple. Better get yourself a new Windows computer that is capable of playing games DUSK rather than getting Macs that would become useless in a few years due to compat. issues and them being expensive to repair.

And here's another interesting thing about MacOS's compat. issues while I am at it: Back in the Apple II days, the devs used to heavily make use of Apple II's undocumented functions, making it nearly impossible for Apple to add/change anything it the ROM due to compat. issues. Once the Apple II ProDOS became a thing, they gave a very clear warning that they would remove/change undocumented functions on a whim, without notice. Which is why I guess Apple nowadays sticks with their "deprecate as much as possible" policy.

Expect Apply to gradually phase out x86 support from their MacOS once they ship in first ARM-based Macs, too. With the direction they are going it should be clear that they don't really care about usability of their products. Whether that will change with their ARM-based Macs or not, I don't know.

Apple will only care about one market with Macs - the true iSlaves who have no way of getting out. And to those they can comfortably sell the shittiest product possible for the highest price that won't drive them off. I wonder how long that will continue to work. One interesting tidbit I recently read said that in relative terms the Mac market is outpacing the desktop/laptop market in general - but it's hard to see this being reflected in general usage numbers. Which leads to the inevitable conclusion that there must be a significant loss of old devices that need to be replaced - far higher than for the rest...

BTW, it really hurts reading Apple centric web sites when trying to get some unbiased info. These people are so unbelievably clueless... :?
