I went with the bat as a universal bludgeon. Partly I went with what was available, and partly I don't like arsenals bloated with unnecessary weapons. So I just went with a handful of weapons that each bring something the others don't.

Fist: very close range, rapid fire, can be powered up with berserk strength
Bat: good reach, heavy damage, but really slow
Kick: in-between fist and bat, always available except when shotgun is selected
Chainsaw: very close range, very rapid, always gibs so kills the unkillable zombies
Shotgun: long range, two fire modes, and kills multiple targets at once; limited ammo, slow reload
Potassium Bomb: long range, slow trajectory, splash damage
Terror Blast: long range, rapid fire

This caught my interest after seeing it mentioned on Doom Mod Madness. It looks very interesting. Any plans on making a third episode?

I consider the Splatterhouse story to have concluded with part 2 on the genesis. If enough people want to try a community episode i'd be down to MC it and compile it.

Splatterhouse 3 was the final part of the series produced for the Genesis. Though there are four different endings, the best ending brings a conclusive end to the series as the Terror Mask is permanently destroyed.

I know, but it was generic and cliche compared to the first two, and feels tacked on to extend a franchise. The first two are much more intriguing and have a natural, organic connection.

Splatterhouse: Rick fights his way through a haunted house to save his girlfriend, only to end up killing her instead when she turns into a monster. Awesome.

Splatterouse 2: Rick dives into the depths of Hell to rescue Jenny's spirit and bring her back to life. Fucking awesome.

Splatterhouse 3: An evil dude wants to sacrifice Rick's family to conquer/destroy the world. Yawn.

It's like 1 is a classic indie horror film from the 80s, 2 is the sequel that everyone wanted and a perfect follow-up to the original, and 3 is... the inevitable watered-down Hollywood sequel (making the new Splatterhouse the equally inevitable shitty Hollywood reboot that fails to restart the franchise).

SH3 lacks the personal touch of the first two: all that's at stake in 1 and 2 is the love of Rick's life (and his own life, too, sure). If he fails, they're both dead, and the rest of the world has no idea what happened -- Rick and Jen are alone in their own little corner of hell made just for them. There's also the fear of the unknown at work: you have no idea what the hell these things are, nor where they came from, and you probably don't want to know.

3 takes us to typical "cataclysmic threat" territory, explains the source of the monsters with a generic villain, and barely balances the humdrum with the fact that there's more than a game over consequence for failing to save your family members. It'd help if the game were actually fun, too, but it's more of an exercise in frustration and tedium.

Fair enough. I just wanted to know your reasons for leaving out the third instalment.

Updated the Hell level (episode 2 finale) to include more health and ammo.

Updates!

- A few level tweaks to reduce tedium, especially final levels.

- Bat has 3 damage frames instead of one, allowing you to maul enemies more effectively with a single swing.

- Potassium Bombs are more damaging.

- Boreworms are less damaging.

- Bagman has shorter attack range.

So far loving this mod, but I have a question about the weapons. Does the bat lose durability, or something, requiring another one later on?

Nope, it's permanent, along with chainsaw.

After seeing what a reception Splatterhouse got through the month of October, I started working on the third episode to conclude Rick and Jenny's ordeal. It is a work in progress, but this is what to expect with the next update:

- 6 spooky new maps

- New monsters to squish with your fists

- Graphical updates for the episode bosses Dr. West (all new sprites) and Professor Mueller (major facelift)

- Teaser encounters with villains West and Mueller in their respective episodes

- A few fixes to maps in episodes 1 and 2: map mechanics, texture misalignments, locations of items, etc

- Improved storyline based on that of the third game

I played this a few months ago and had a blast with it, so having a whole other episode to look forward is really awesome. Also, tangentially related, I was wondering if you possibly had any plans to ever expand on your Ghoul School modification? That was one of the first mods of yours that I ever tried and I've come back to it many times since. I just love the atmosphere and aesthetic, in a similar, but more lighthearted way than Splatterhouse.

It'd be fun to do that, and i did experiment here and there with more episodes, but nothing really came of it. Nothing that seemed worth pursuing anyway. I'm really shocked and awed that that was among the first you played and that you keep revisiting it. Nice to know the effort wasn't wasted on that odd little thing.
