"Lite" version of GZDoom

Post by AtomicLugia »

It would be great to have a version of GZDoom which is specificly made for standalone games. It's PK3 will come with only the actors that are used by the engine and no actors from the games. But it should at least come with a "empty" IWAD and some basic actors (like a playerclass for testing etc.) to make it easier to start modding it.

If all those actors got removed so would be all the code those standalone games might depend on. Not everything out there is doing total replacements, many mods use part of the internal definitions. The official way to do a standalone game is to remove zd_extra.pk3 which contains all content that wasn't released under a GPL compatible license.

I believe FreeDoom is an option for that if you want.

Also, anyone with enough savvy to make an entire game using GZDoom should also be savvy enough to make their own minimal IWAD to base it on. (In fact, the minimum requirement for a minimal IWAD that is enough to get the game started and no more is very minimal indeed.)

This gets requested a lot, but it's pretty clear the answer is "No".

It's simply not technically feasible. If you really think you can do better, pull requests are welcome.
