Maximum Sprite Size?

Post by Enjay »

Can anyone tell me if there is a maximum sprite size in Zdoom or if any special consideration has to be made for large sprites? I know that LilWhiteMouse produced a mod a couple of years ago that had some very large sprites (scaled down) and for some people the game would crash when these sprites came in to view. Although I think it may have been possible to avoid the problem by using a command line option or console command?

Anyway, I'd like to use a sprite that is 128 wide but 512 tall (it's a space rocket). I have tried it and it seemed OK but does anyone know if it is likely to cause any problems?

It depends on the conversion tool. ZDoom supports larger graphics but the original sprite format couldn't handle these. Most modern converters should though. But if it works it's ok. You should see corruption if it wasn't

OK, thanks. I was just concerned because of LWM's mod. Her sprites looked fine when run with the command line param, but crashed the game without it. :? Mind you, it was a long time ago with a much older Zdoom.

Get rid of that stone age tool. This is not its only problem. It's pathetic enough that it still doesn't support Hexen format levels.

Wintex always wonks out for me.

I use Deutex. It gives you a ton of error messages when you try to import large sprites, but nevertheless does successfully import the large sprites.

XWE works perfectly fine for everything nowadays, especially with the latest beta (which includes WinTex-style sound playing on selection).

You just have to select Hexen as your IWAD, but I don't use WinTex anymore.

That explains it! Somehow it just fits perfectly into WinTex's design philosophy of limiting the user as much as possible...

I use it. And i'll keep using it until it doesn't support something I badly need. Becides, I have XWE gathering dust in the corner just incase.
