Online automatic updater

Post by crazyflyingdonut »

So, GZDoom has a new version too frequently for me. Because there are times when it takes me a while to realize that GZDoom has a version newer than the one I just downloaded a couple weeks ago. And I have to download the new version manually each and every single time.

There are some software that I use that have a way of detecting for a new update every time I open the software. If there is an update, it will ask me if I want to download it.

Here's my question...

WHY DOESN'T GZDOOM DO THAT!?

Wow I thought the last time this was suggested was a LOT more recent, but it turns out it was more than a year ago: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=56599

No wonder I had such trouble finding it.

Nevertheless, this has been suggested and [No]'d before. What might me possible is to put a little Trident control inside of a box that opens to a simple PHP script to validate GZDoom's current version, and can inform you if you are using something outdated (something like this should be easily disabled), but otherwise, this is something no developer right now has interest in.

It'd probably be a good idea to at least have an advisory checker because despite the stickies, it constantly comes up for people trying to run mods. I'd also like to bring up about re-wording the ZScript version error message. "Version mismatch. 3.7.0 expected but only 3.6.0 supported" should more strongly indicate to the user that GZDoom is out-of-date. Something like "This requires ZScript version 3.7.0 but only 3.6.0 is supported. GZDoom needs to be updated."
