Greetings Mortal, Are you ready to Map?
Hexen - love or hate it, could do with a community project. DUMP, HUMP, HUMP-mini and QUMP have all been very successful at getting new and old mappers to try their hand at mapping - and now its Hexen's turn. Anyone is welcome to join, even if you've never made a Hexen map before.
When?
Project will start officially on the 27th of August (You can always start earlier if you like). You will have 4 weeks to make a map, then we'll have a week of playtesting and finishing touches.
Mapping deadline is September 22nd. Final project deadline: Last day of September.
What Do I need to Do?Discord Server: https://discord.gg/CK8TE2R (important for keeping track of your map!)
- Make a hexen map. Can be any theme, length or difficulty. You can use ACS scripting if you like, but its not necessary.
How is this Going to Work?What Format, etc. are we using?
- We will have a central hub which connects to all the maps (or 2 hubs if we get enough mappers). Some maps will be sealed off until progress is made by the player.
- Everyone will make a map, one person can make a hub if they like (2 people if we get enough for 2 hubs).
- Each map will have a single goal: This goal can be a key, a puzzle item, or a switch. Keys and switches will open a new area in the hub. Puzzle items can be used to open a new area in your map, or to open a new area in the hub, and/or we can use multiple puzzle items to unlock a final area.
- Maps should only have 1 key in them, as keys are for the entire hub, not just one map. There are 11 different keys though.
- If you co-ordinate between mappers, your maps goal can open a new area in another persons map (provided that map is currently accessible).
We will use a 'first in first serve' system of claiming keys and puzzle items. You can claim keys and/or puzzle items in the discord, or message me.- This project will be kept track of in Discord (a free chat program which you can use through your browser or desktop/mobile). Discord allows us to easily organize things, have a separate channel for each persons map and generally keep track of what's going on (and talk shit / share hexen memes whathaveyou).
If you don't want to use discord, that's ok, but it will be harder to co-ordinate with you and we strongly advise trying discord as it makes life easy! Use the link above to join.HELP, I CANNOT HEXEN!
- Use zdoom: Hexen (Hexen Format) for your map. Or Hexen (Hexen Format). Use the Zdoom ACS option rather than Hexen ACS. UDMF format is also fine.
- Use the resources from the regular HEXEN.wad
- There will be no custom weapons or enemies.
- Jumping, Crouching and freelook will be enabled, so map with that in mind.
- You can use custom music (in MIDI format only) and ambient sounds (in .ogg format) if you like.
- We will be testing on zdoom 2.8.1 (the latest version) and aiming at zdoom / GZDoom play
We will have people standing by to help you with ACS, and we have an example .wad with the script for some breakable glass that you can drop into your map, as well as examples of polyobjects and some other stuff.
