Is newstuff chronicles over at Doomworld dead?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Is newstuff chronicles over at Doomworld dead?

Post by Lexus Alyus »

I noticed that the last Newstuff Chronicles over at Doomworld is over a month old, is Newstuff dead?

I really hope not, because it seems like the go to place for posting new Doom projects. I eventually intend to actually finish one of the 4 projects I've currently got on the go, but it would be a real downer if I didn't have a place to post them to that's seen by lot's of people.

I would post this on Doomworld but there seems to be a maximum 3 posts per day for new members (why is this? Is this the case for all new members or is it just me?)

Doomworld News are dead, not just /newstuff. The last news item was a ZDaemon release (as if anybody cared about that POS), and all other port releases of recent months were completely ignored. Nobody seems to bother anymore.

Does that mean that the Cacoawards are now dead too? Maybe it's just me but this seems to be really sad, it's as if classic Doom is dying :(

Is there anything like an alternative to Newstuff these days? What's the best place to post new project releases that would get maximum exposure?

Does this mean I should just give up modding for Doom and work on Quake or Half Life 2 instead?

So many questions :D

What? You want give up modding just because of lack of Doomworld Newstuff reviews or something like that?

I don't know what should I say...if you do mods just because of that, then what game it is doesn't matter, seriously.

Well, do whatever you want, nobody will stop you if you decided to modding Quake or HL2.

Cacowards are far from dead. They'll be making a return this year, I'd bet what little money I have on that. But please, let's leave it at that, because the discussions surrounding the cacowards are sure to uncover some unresolved negativity which will inevitably result in yet another argument that we just don't need, here.

You're compeltely right, I don't want to promote any negativity here :) If you have anything negative to say about cacoawards then please refrain from posting :D

I've been spending the last decades or so not really socilising with anyone, not even (especially) on the interent, so I don't really know where the popular places are for Doom these days. All I know is here and Doomworld, and my impression was that it was all happening on Doomworld. I guess I need a bit of a recent history lesson :D It seemed to me that if you uploaded to newtuff then every one that plays Doom wads would get to at least know about it. Is idgames and newstuff still the best place to post new wads?

If there are outlets for Doom wads that are bigger than Doomworld then that's cool for me, I just fear that Doom modding is dead, which I'm hopeful that it isn't and it doesn't seem to be from my POV, but I don't really know that much.

My biggest fear is that I'll put a lof of effort in to Doom wads but then get no interest because nobody plays classic Doom anymore (now I've written that that seems completely ludicrous :D)

The truth is that I never want to stop modding for Doom because I love how easy it is for me and Doom just means so much for me, and has done since 94!

I just have bad experiences with people ignoring everything I create, which has persisted my whole life. I just want the most amount of people to enjoy what I create, but if nobody has any way of discovering my art then nobody will ever know my potential. I dunno, I just feel like I suck at self promotion and that my art is condmned to be ignored for all eternity :D

"On the internet" is typically a good start. If it's good, news tends to travel fast.

If.

I dunno, I have this feeling that news spreading has nothing to do with the quality of the art. Excluding my own stuff (it is completely possible that everything I create is just too crap to bother with :D) I've seen/played/listened to things that have comepletely blown me away yet it seems like it has hardly any popularity, then again I've seen really popular stuff that I've just not been very impressed with at all.

Just make a thread on Doomworld and if it attracts attentions it'll get views and posts.

Linguica wanted to develop this feature of the IPB software into a replacement for Doomworld news, but feels it's too limited for now (no way to embed external links, notably).

Well, of course some of the stuff that gets tons of hits is gonna be kind of mediocre (disregarding the entire concept of individual taste - one man's steak is another man's dog food, after all), partially because it hits a specific itch for a lot of people, and partially because... a lot of people know about it. The internet's a big place with lots of outlets to make friends and show off cool stuff, now more than ever, but you actually have to make the effort.

And therein lies the problem. Hermiting yourself away will just result in nobody playing your stuff (and also living a lonely, miserable life, but that's neither here nor there).

Newstuff is not the be-all-end-all. If you catch the right attention and/or have that special novelty factor, you can get a lot of eyes from the wider, wider internet. Posting WIP screenshots and video on sites like Twitter and Tumblr are a great way to get lots of attention, as recently ably demonstrated by Arvy's Diabolus Ex and pretty much half the stuff TerminusEst13 puts out. There is no isolationist policy of mostly ignoring the rest of the internet anymore - the borders are open, and we've been trading with them for years.

Also, the Discord server is a great place to ask questions and get feedback in real-ish time, and my mods have only gotten better for its existence.

Caligari87 has been doing the same thing for ages and nobody really seems to have a problem with it. Just saying that so you aren't accidentally creating a double standard. :P
On the other hand, I agree with everything else you've said.

Maybe I need to step in and save the /newstuff chronicles again...but tbh I don't have the enthusiasm for it now. (or the time, I actually go out these days)

Times have changed since the days of fixed reviewers...I guess there isn't the appetite for that sort of workload now. (probably cos there's a lot more stuff to get through and there are more distractions around like social media etc.)

Actually, Lexus was doing it before me (and was where I got the idea from in the first place), so if anyone gets a pass on this it's him. Sorry for the sidebar, carry on.

If new content is being made so fast that it's not possible to cover all of it then I would say that's a good thing!

I always seem to be subject to this kind of double standard :D It's always ok for everyone else, but not me :D But yeah, as Caligari87 pointed out I've pretty much been doing the  thing the whole time I've been on this forum! But I'll let Kinsie off as you have given some good advice that I will definitely take on board :) One of the reason's I'm trying to become a bit more active on forums is to break my hermiting habits and start to get in the practice of being a bit more sociable.

I've created an account on Doomworld with the intention of posting new projects I complete. I've been using twitter for some time now and not had much luck with it. Yeah, I've got over a thousand followers, but nobody really seems to be engaging with anything I post (I've posted Doom mod wips and my music, both have had no luck). For decades I've been ignored on the internet, and it's not for lack of trying, I used to be really motivated and optimistic, but it seems to have gotten me nowhere and now I've become really ground down and jaded... I'll definitely check out some of the other social networks mentioned here though, but I refuse to participate in facebook! I've got lots of personal reasons and bad experiences with facebook :D

My lack of success on the internet is probably not because I'm being victimised, but it really does feel like it a lot of the time...

@The Ultimate Doomer: It would be cool to see some more Doom mods from you, even if they're just small little projects. Gotta keep mapping for Doom, Doom needs you :D
