Microsoft + Github Acquisition (Rumors)

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Github did just fine under its old management. I am not 100% confident that the new management will do as well, or any better, especially considering Microsoft's history.

The new Microsoft seems more serious than the Ballmer's Microsoft ( see Nokia or Skype, for example). But it's still a mega corporation .
I would say: let's wait .
In the worst case scenario: how it could be difficult to move the entire *zdoom codebase to another git host?

It's not difficult at all. In fact there are copies of the ZDoom repository existing on Bitbucket as it is, and it's really a simple upload to get the entire repo, along with its history, imported.

The real issue would be convincing people to use the new location, really.

At any rate, I hope it doesn't go that far. I have to say though, I really do not feel like this is a good transition for Github. Like I said - they were doing just fine without Microsoft. It's not to say that Microsoft fucks up everything they touch, except, well, they do.

I think the reason for this happening was GitHub was doing extremely badly, financially. This is their exit strategy.

They've been touching up Git and GitHub for quite a while now and seem to have gone all-in on Git to the point of moving the entire 300+gb Windows repo over to it.

I suspect a GitHub acquisition would be slightly less apocalyptic than people are expecting/hoping for, and slightly more oh-hey-there's-a-button-in-visual-studio-now. Probably some more development focus on corporate customers, too.

Actually, that Atom text editor might get shitcanned in favor of VS Code, but Atom wasn't very good in the first place. A fancy text editor built using node.js? Come on, man.

This likely factors extremely heavily into things, too. Start-ups aren't very good at the whole staying-afloat thing once that initial investor capitol dries up. Just look at how much money Twitter's pissed away in the last decade!

It's official, pending regulatory approvals. GitHub will "remain an open platform" as it's always been for open-source projects, with Microsoft throwing their existing sales and partner force behind the paid-up enterprise side of things. So, basically business as usual for non-paying folks like us, I guess.

Of course, there's a chance things will change for the worse in the future, but that's in the future and I reserve the right to scream hysterically and run around with what little hair I have left on fire once that time comes. :P

Note the careful omission.

I expect most things will run decently for the first year or two before the MS-isms start creeping in.

There's official statements, that've been out for a few hours now:

Satya Nadella's (Microsoft CEO)
Chris Wanstrath's (GitHub CEO)
