Your arcade stories? (Old & new)

I remember playing on a few of those VS units, one in a theater, one in a grocery store and one at a convenience store. The first time I saw Super Mario Bros was at a Showbiz Pizza Time, a Chuckie Cheese sort of place, and it was a standalone VS unit, while those others had multiple games.

Congrats about the cab! I played that in Target myself. My main problem was the monitor being so small, but the games were arcade correct from what I recall.

Remember those biorhythm machines?

Last time I saw one of those was on the NY state thruway at a service stop. Still working too! Probably from the 90s.

We had three Flipper McCoy's arcades in this area. Two of them are gone, but the last (right on the beach) still exists and still has many of the old video games. Not very many pinball games left though. There are other arcades around, but nowadays, games are all about winning tickets rather than just having fun and trying to beat a high score. Funny thing is, those other two Flipper McCoy's were actually better than the one at the beach. About 15% of the buildings was some kind of restaurant/pizza place, and the rest of it was just row upon row of video games and pinball games. One of them even had that super-rare I-Robot game. The other one still had Pong up until it closed down. Now, one is a kind of water buffalo lodge or something, and the other has been empty ever since it closed.

I've only seen someone build one of those fancy pinball emulator machines. Dude put some monitors in a pinball like table and loaded up Pinball FX2 and streamed it to the table so it looks like a real pinball machine. Not a bad idea honestly...

The "not so hot" one is still quite decent. It's in a very good location on the beach and does a lot of business in the summertime since the place is jam packed full of tourists. Not so much during the winter though.

Maybe a half hour away depending on traffic.

Oh yeah, I just remembered, it was here that I saw the world's largest pinball machine (Hercules) about when it was first made. At the time, I was just a little kid, so my arms could barely reach the flipper buttons, which were about the size of paint can lids.

A herculean effort from Atari! I had never actually heard of this one before. I looked up a video and it was pretty neat. I'd like to play it myself!

Well, of course, watching one video led to more videos, and I got to see a lot of electromechanical games I never knew, and even a couple I did! What amazing feats of engineering! Heh, advances in computing sure made the job easier in some ways.

I grew up in 80's arcades, but I swear that if I had been born even twenty years sooner, I still would've frequented arcades. Just way too much cool stuff!
