Good! Maybe try out some other colors, like, like blue a la Wolfenstein 3D.

No, no, the players need to be able to read the text...

Nice. One color combination that would fit the 8-bit style well would be plain black as background with white borders and text. It would require recoloring the fonts, though.

Exactly! An additional step would be to change to font to one more 8-bit looking, like the standard NES font, although this would probably only work for the small font used for ammo.

I would have personally gone with the first one, mostly because of the pseudo-retro style, which is basically what the voxels are doing.

But if you're going to go NES-style for the statusbar, I say you should go all the way:

My Doom Noir mini-project has shown me that using colors other than black and white makes it look like a ZX Spectrum game. Red might be ok but yellow and cyan or too garish for my tastes. Icons for keys would be the exception, of course.

Not seeing the problem :P

But yeah, I have a strong preference for neon colors, myself.

In my opinion stylistically this is the perfect choice. The ammo text could be replaced by icons that distinguish the ammo types, but everything else is simply perfect in 8bit
