Why are most wads not on the archives?
Why are most wads not on the archives?
I don't get that at all. Today I wanted to play Mr.Hoppington's Shape Search and I knew it wasn't on the archives yet,but when I went to one of the links to download it the link was down. So many works I feel are gonna be lost because they aren't uploading there. Is there a reason behind that?

Re: Why are most wars not on the archives?

Re: Why are most wars not on the archives?
1. Because not everyone wants their work there.
2. Because they have been rejected (long filenames are common, non-zips are common, lack of email is common)
3. Betas don't belong in idgames
I'm on the let sleeping dogs lie side of things as some authors would feel a peace of mind if there isn't a kid uploading to gain experience points and attention on some site that has no business to have a user ranking system.
Respect their rights. Don't be that self-proclaimed "mod messiah"

I just wasn't sure, but I mean what are we supposed to do if the wad is gone?
Re: Why are most wars not on the archives?
We've had a solution to that for a very long time, now.spoone wrote:I just wasn't sure, but I mean what are we supposed to do if the wad is gone?
And if no one has it - tough luck Charlie. It's unfortunate but it happens.

And i think that the preservation of gaming datas like mods, wads and roms are important to the gaming community.leileilol wrote:1. Because not everyone wants their work there.

Saving games from disappearing into the abyss of forgottenness is the reason why such measures came to be.
Take for exemple George Lucas who still hasnt given the original version of Episode 4,5 and 6 to the National Film Preservation Board.
And it's because of such decisions that some fans of the franchise out there, tried to re-create the original versions by heavily editing.
By putting mods/wads/roms on archived sites,we can guarantee the safe keep of gaming.

Re: Why are most wads not on the archives?
You are only seeing things from one perspective here - and keep in mind that development takes on a whole new perspective.
Sometimes a work is never "completed" - even if it is "completed" - if /idgames had a more intuitive way to update projects (even if it kept a repository of past releases that'd be fine) I think more things would end up on it.
Needless to say, /idgames is pretty forbidding towards in-progress works.

Re: Why are most wads not on the archives?
I agree. I thought that's what the archives were for. If people aren't gonna upload their wads there, then there is no reason for the archives. That's just my opinion. It's not fact.Freaklore1 wrote:And i think that the preservation of gaming datas like mods, wads and roms are important to the gaming community.leileilol wrote:1. Re: Why are most wads not on the archives?
I understand that it's a tin line when it come to putting roms, wads and mods on the internet, that it is questionable on a legal or illegal perspective.
But i always saw the positive in such measures instead of only focusing on the negative, like i said it help in preserving the history of gaming,so that nothing is lost forever to the tides of time.
Lots of films from the early 1900's (1900 till 1960's i think) got lost in fire accidents, destroyed by the flames, wich make it difficult to recover some of the source materials, that's why there isnt as many footages as there should actually be,especially the most early ones.
Heard that some of the early Doctor Who episodes got lost in such accidents.
Sometime, good things can come out from questionable actions.

Freaklore - You want us to load in-progress works to /idgames? YOU go talk to them. YOU convince them to change their rules to be more friendly towards us. YOU want it so bad - YOU can fight for it.
Otherwise - we have nothing to discuss.

Re: Why are most wads not on the archives?
Wowowow, calm down lady,im just giving my perspective on the matter, that's all.
It's just sad that some gaming corporations are pretty strict in their decisions to keep their properties (weither in a vault or storehouse/hangar),but that some time such decisions can lead said properties to disappear forever.
That only normal peoples, the ones that dont work in a AAA game/movie corporation, are the ones trying to preserve gaming+filmmaking history because they care a lot more about their favorite games+movies.
That's why you have peoples like the guy who made the despecialised edition of Star Wars or peoples that put roms/wads on the internet even if technically it's not legal.
And that's also the reason why independant game developpers (indie games) exist, because sometime certain peoples need to take matters into their own hands.

As much as you've got a point there, I wonder if it's that relevant to this thread's main point?
