NoAutosaveHint still says "Game Saved"

Postby Enjay » Thu Apr 28, 2022 2:22 pm

Perhaps I'm just misunderstanding the purpose but I thought that NoAutosaveHint would stop the game saying "Game saved" on transitioning to a new map. However, it doesn't seem to.

I think that the following demonstrates the (potential) issue:

Code: Select allExpand view
map MAP01 "Test01"
{
   next = "MAP02"
   secretnext = "MAP02"
   sky1 = "SKY1"
   cluster = 5
}

map MAP02 "Test02"
{
   next = "MAP03"
   secretnext = "MAP03"
   sky1 = "SKY1"
   cluster = 5
   NoAutosaveHint
}

I expected not to see "Game saved" shortly after transitioning to MAP02, but it's still there.

Noticed in 4.7.1 and g4.8pre-350-g643e5c87f

Working as intended if I remember correctly: the feature doesn't prevent autosaving but it prevents the autosave counter from increasing, so that the autosave it makes is then overwritten by the next autosave.

Well, after a quick search, it turns out that my memory:

Graf Zahl wrote:Ok, I added as I described. You can set a 'noautosavehint' map flag. If this is set the initial autosave is still performed but the counter not increased so if another autosave is performed later on it will overwrite the flagged one.

I think this way everybody can be happy: You don't get spammed with useless autosaves but if a player chooses to abort the game right after starting a level with such a hint he'll still get a valid autosave there.

And this is inherently not abusable. :P

is better than yours! :p

For me, the name doesn't describe the function. Then again, I don't know what a better name for this might be...

That was where my confusion came from (twice apparently). To me the "hint" was the game telling me that it has made an autosave. So I figured that not having a hint (as the name says) implied that it would remove the message. Obviously I was wrong, but that's why I thought that.

As to why I made the mistake twice, I guess I must be losing it. :shrug:

Something like "OverwriteAutosave", but then again it's far too late to rename it.

I guess a compromise could be to make this flag display the game saved message at a higher developer message level. So it wouldn't be shown in the default settings, without being actually suppressed. (And other saves, including other autosaves, would display the message at the regular level.)
