If playing as the Mage in Hexen, selecting the Frost Shards results in an unsightly vertical gap between the top of the HUD and the bottom of the weapon sprites. It only happens if the HUD from the original game is used. It doesn't happen if the screen size is increased to the point where GZDoom's overlay HUD kicks in. At first I thought it might be related to some of the sprite work that went into the 4.6.0 release but downgrading to 4.5.0 immediately disproves that theory.
The attached screenshot is taken at 1920x1080, using the OpenGL renderer with the default settings, though it's not specific to the OpenGL renderer. I have found that fiddling with the
Resolution Scale setting can act as a workaround, either by increasing the size of the HUD so that the gap is no longer visible, altering the vertical position of the sprites, or both. Specifically, choosing any of these makes the gap disappear:
- 320x200
- 640x400
- 960x600
- Lowest possible scale
Also, selecting either of the following
Scale Factor values acts as a workaround:
These workarounds may be fine for purists but not so much for those that wish to take full advantage of their native display resolutions. To reproduce, start a game as the Mage, enter "nra" to bestow all weapons then press 2 to select Frost Shards.
