Strife: Veteran Edition Chalice Dead End Still Occurs

Postby Paynamia » Mon Mar 22, 2021 11:31 pm

When playing Strife: Veteran Edition through GZDoom (4.5 & g3b50f7dfa), the dead end that occurs in the original release of the game still occurs. SVE's behavior is to move the player to the starting area, add new guards and allow the game to continue.

Here's a video showing SVE's intended behavior:

Attached is my demo and save showing the behavior in GZDoom g3b50f7dfa.

That isn't really surprising because the entire SVE support consists of adding a new MAPINFO and a few new actors, but no changes to game logic whatsoever. If this behavior needs special coding it won't be supported.

I haven't included any code from SVE here.

The governor can be put back to his "default" state by typing in the console:

Code: Select allExpand view
take QuestItem2

This is of course not a proper solution, but if you are trying to rescue your playthrough, you can do this.

That aside, yeah, this would require some special coding. SVE has this stuff hardcoded.

All of this behaviour can prooooobably be replicated as a mod.

This is so gross I certainly won't add it to the code. Aside from that I never understood the fuss about it. This is one of the earliest places in the entire game - so even in the worst case if you get into the dead end and have to restart it's merely a few minutes of replaying (i.e. the initial mission to silence the traitor.) The second actual mission of the game is what the governor will hand out, either the "messy" or the "bloody" one.
