No, it never gave me that error before. It isn't a matter of me never having noticed. It isn't optional, either, apparently, because it kicks my ass OUT after that. XP issue? I just moved up from '98...

Shouldn't be. It works just fine under XP for me. If anything, better than it did in '98.

Just tried it myself. In order to get:

Code: Select allExpand view
THING name file cannot be opened!

I had to have this in my dehacked.ini

Code: Select allExpand view
# Added by John K. for changing THING names
namefile = names.nam

Putting a # infront of "namefile = names.nam" stopped me getting the error message. So you could try that. If it still bombs out, then chances are it's nothing to do with the names file.

Note, that even when I got the error message, deh was quite happy to start without the names file. It should be an optional thing even if the entry in the ini isn't commented out.

Anyway, if that doesn't work, you could try running it like this

dehacked >file.txt

Then open file.txt and see if there is anything meaningful in it. (Probably not, dehacked doesn't give that much in the way of meaningful output, but there could be something). That is if it is starting up so quickly you can't read any output it is giving you. It usually just reports that it has found your WAD, your exe and your hacked exe.

Oops, it wasn't finding doombak.exe. Hah.

Anyway:

Code: Select allExpand view
Patch File for DeHackEd v3.0

# Note: Use the pound sign ('#') to start comment lines.

Doom version = 21
Patch format = 6

Thing 23 (Pain Elemental)
Bits = 6308358

DHE 3.1 was able to read that much. Didn't give any errors. The original patch was 66k, this one comes out to 16. Code to text, I guess it works out.

Okay, the game now ignores binary Dehacked patches instead of trying to load them as text patches.
