What's up With the Decals!?

Post by MrJohnny »

I've been quietly developing a project of mine, and after updating to a svn build of GZDoom all of my decal definitions got screwed! I didn't even touch the decaldef lump. I had everything perfectly aligned, but now it's all off-centered! Is this just a weird bug? Has the decal code been rewritten or revised or something?

Please post a sample mod. What was the version of GZDoom which worked fine?

It's not finished yet, so I'd rather not post the full mod just yet. Would it be fine if I gave you a piece of the decal code? The pk3 below contains just the blood decals. It works just fine with GZDoom g3.3.2.

What am I supposed to do with these decal definitions? I have no idea how exactly you are using them.
Do you have custom actors for this? Should these decals be loaded with some mod?
Please do understand: the more time developers will spend figuring out how to reproduce the problem, the less interest they will have in fixing it.

That's fine but I don't see anything wrong with decals. Could you please post a screenshot?
Just in case, what's your spec, graphics hardware in particular?

Everything connected and looked seamless before I updated GZDoom, but now it looks all screwy.

I hope someone else can help you because those decals look the same to me in 3.3.2 and in the latest version 0a139e9 at the moment.
To be on the same page I did comparison using OpenGL renderer only.

Well, this is definitely strange. It's not just this, either. My HUD is screwed, too. One step at a time though, am I right? If something's going wonky on my end, then for the love of christ I haven't the slightest idea what it could be. Oh well. Thanks for the help, mental!

Do you use the same .ini file with old and new versions of GZDoom? You can try without an .ini just to be sure that custom setting have no effects on this. We had such cases before when only a particular combination of user's setting led to a problem.

Just tried it. No luck. I went ahead and tested it on a different computer as well, but unfortunately nothing changed.

It really sounds like a display driver issue - every angle this comes from seems to suggest that as the highest possibility. If your driver is the latest version, try downgrading.

Could you please save a game in old version of GZDoom (with some decals visible) and load it in new one? Does the issue appear? If so, please you attach screenshots from both versions along with saved game file.

Okay. This is just weird. I loaded the mod in GZDoom g3.3.2 and took a screenshot of the decals, along with the screwed up HUD. The image is below.

As you can see, the decals look fine, but the HUD doesn't. There was a time when EVERYTHING worked fine, but for some reason some things are just falling apart.

The following image was taken from the newer version of GZDoom (g3.4.1).

Now—for some reason—the decals look off but the HUD is fine!

The HUD isn't screwed up; adjust your HUD scaling options in the options.

[edit] Also, to my eyes, the decals look identical between the screenshots.
