Ghost Monsters - compatibility

Postby Matilda Wammerbedging » Sun Mar 08, 2015 12:55 pm

Hi there, I'm Zed from DW, glad to be here (and thanks Wild Weasel for your help!).

This is more a request than a bug, but I'm posting here anyway, I hope it's the right place.

In the "trying to find a wad" thread on Doomworld, Brad_tilf recently asked for a map with ghost monsters, and it caught my attention that while ZDoom takes into account this bug for a number of maps, there are still some wads that are not included and rely on this, and I was wondering if future versions of ZDoom may include this wads also. The wads I'm talking about are:

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... proj-x.zip (MAP14)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... ternal.zip (MAP25)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... archie.zip
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... u/seej.zip
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... 6pack2.zip (MAP02)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... uadron.zip (MAP21)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... yhem13.zip (MAP05)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index. ... impgod.zip

Thanks for your attention, and good day.

As a query, is there a technical reason why Ghost Monsters isn't available as a user compatibility option? Or is it a simple case of nobody thought to do so?

The reason is that by default a gibbed monster is replaced by another actor. To be honest, I think this particular old change should be undone and be reverted to the original, i.e. making 'corpsegibs' the default and then 'vileghosts' a regular compatibility setting and letting the END USER set their preference for it and remove all compatibility settings. The current workaround for a shitty workaround that's not even necessary is a very bad idea, if you ask me. The gib replacement may have some reason for a player corpse but not for monsters.
