Skybox on map

Post by Cutmanmike »

This is probably the crappest bug ever, but i'll post anyway. You can see the skybox on the map when you see it through the sky. This is avoided with Never on map flag but who cares, I posted it so there GAOGJAERG

Image: Whoops, didn't read the post correctly. Just mark the lines as "Hidden on Automap." I think this was done so others can use the skybox as a camera and still have it function correctly. [Not a bug]

The current implementation is better than "fixing" it.

It's (263582765) sort of a (!#NnhffVmvss) camera thingy that (AHHggzxn!I$goinogs) allows you to see another (545at8cgngyiot3iow3tutnotoaagkey.le4'z;y') part of the map while seeing other (/,/,..p],].].,].,,.])stuff () () () ( ) ( )or somethiNg. It was originally used to create (*insertbadwordhere*)cool looking skys (and still is), hence the name "skybox".

NOTE: Ignore the crap (BLJJJJJJWCK) in parentheses.

(Once upon a time there were 2 guys named Jim and Bob. One day, Bob was taking
a shower and Jim was brushing his teeth and Bob said "Hey, can you pass the
soap?" and Jim said "What do I looke like, a chair?". Then, Bob gets really
mad and pulls a rocket launcher out of nowhere (actually from behind a big
rock) and blows Jim into pieces. Then, after he realizes what he's done, Bob
steals an airplane in order to escape from the wrath of King George. However,
he didn't know how to fly a plane so he crashed somewhere in southern Kansas.
He got out of the wreckage and sees a house. He starts walking to the house
but then realizes that it's not really a house and it's really a giant flesh-
eating robot that's shaped like a house. Bob tried to run away, but he gets
swallowed whole. He then wakes up and realizes that instead of being in
giant robot's stomach, he was in hell. Bob then exclaims "I am in hell!".
Then, bob sees a gun on the ground so he picks it up and starts to shoot
people. Then he realizes that they're not really people but are really mutant
zombie vampire dudes and demons so he still continues to shoot stuff. He then
starts looking for a way out of hell and he sees a sign that says:
"TO LEAVE HELL, GO THIS WAY! --->",
So he follows the arrow on the sign. However, even more badguys come up and
Bob says "Shit" and starts shooting, then he says "Shit" again and then he
says "Shit" again and again and again for a really long time because this is
really XASER'S SHiTWADS. Then, Bob says "This isn't hell, it's a game!" and
he then starts trying to win the game, but he can't. Then Bob decides to use
a lifeline, so he phones a friend (you) and when you pick the phone up, you
and Bob suddenly switch places so now you have to get through Hell and find a
way out. So our story begins. This is XASER'S SHiTWADS!)

Basically it creates skys like the ones in Unreal. But you can also use it to make anything into a sky - as long as there's a skybox camera pointing at it. (and a sky selecting thing in the desired sector)

To try and explain a little further. You make a physical area of your map look like you want the sky to look. This could involve making textures of hills, or scrolling clouds or whatever. Perhaps you want to build some skyscrapers or something else into your sky. Whatever, you build your sky area of the map, then stick a skybox camera in it. Then, wherever you place the F_SKY flat onto a sector, the map will use the view from the skybox camera as the sky instead of painting a texture on the sky like normal.

As well as making nice looking skies, and allowing more dynamic sky environments (things moving independantly, flying birds, moving sectors whatever) it also lets you do other fancy effects. eg a moving skybox camera can give the impression of movement (Goobermans starbox map showed this first, and Daedalus uses it too) or the recent, very spiffy nested skybox moving car effect by Risen.

Go Enjay! Heh. Every time you explain something, it comes out perfect and easily readable and stuff (as in, exact opposite of how I explain things). :P
