While trying out Strife with the newest commits, I noticed that other characters’ lines that are located in language.enu in zd_extra.pk3 don’t translate ingame. After editing the language file, it turns out that the game doesn’t read NPC dialogue from it at all, but from the IWAD instead.
However, the player’s own lines appear in other languages without problems, which is baffling. It means the file is partially doing its job. It looks like this:
