Best/worst video game flamethrowers?

Postby Artman2004 » Sat Feb 20, 2021 6:39 pm

What do you think is the best video game flamethrower? And what's the worst flamethrower? (Lamethrowers, if you will)

Return to Castle Wolfenstein (which was also worked on by the Kingpin devs) looks nice, but from my experience it only starts dealing damage once you let go of the trigger, so it's kind of a mixed bag for me.

The one in GTA 2 is nice.

Strife's is garbage because the firing animation consists of only one frame, you shake as if hitting something with the chainsaw and the range is also disappointing. Its only saving grace is the spreading chain-reaction effect on death of humanoids.

One of my least fav weapons in the 3D GTA games, but I still find the lack of one in GTA 4 onwards strange.

Haven't used the one in Marathon yet, because I once again stopped playing in the middle of the game.

For the small amount of time I played Team Fortress Classic, I still remember the flamethrower's sprites to be so big they cover the whole screen and their small hitbox making it hard to hit anything when aiming off-center.

I found the chemical thrower with napalm in Bioshock 1 to be disappointing as well. Unlike the plasmids, it's not hitscan, but the stream obviously takes a while to reach its target. Then the stream of flame lags behind when aiming, getting worse on higher difficulties because enemy movement and attack speed is increased as well. Also, if you take the range upgrade, flames seem to go through enemies when used at point blank.

Postal Redux and Hatred had good flamethrowers as well I think, Postal 1 is probably mostly the same except for the tank controls.

Speaking of tank controls, I need to replay the first two Resident Evil games so I can form an opinion on these as well.

Far Cry 3 had a really nice flamethrower that was actually useful in that it did tremendous damage and burned flora/fauna so you could expose enemies. The absolute worse ones though? I'd say Resident Evil 2 Remake and any classic RE game that has one. Pitiful damage, although it looks nice.

Yeah, this one actually.

But I am not fond of these postcount++ threads anyway.
