(G)ZDoom and video files

Postby crazyflyingdonut » Fri Nov 01, 2019 7:38 am

So as I was thinking about cutscenes from some of my favorite Build engine games, a thought hit me: Why doesn't GZDoom, which is at this point superior to Build engine in my eyes, have a way to play video files for cutscenes or whatever? I did some digging and I found out that there was a function for that a long time ago, but it was flawed and eventually removed because of it using Windows Media Player (a software that hasn't been updated since 2009) to play video files, and nobody used it anyway.

So, my question eventually evolved to: "Is it possible to replicate Build engine-style cutscenes in GZDoom?" I would personally like to see it happen one day. Obviously, I'm not asking to resurrect the old function nobody used from a long time ago, I'm just wondering if it would even be worth it to try again in a different way.

Ugh... this AGAIN?

There's probably dozens more topics, but these two are probably enough to help reflect why it was never done. The answer is no - and likely won't change.
