I tried to do it, but there's so much red on the image i end fucking up the two last rows.
You could make it use an alpha rendering style, use the command A_SetTranslucency OR
Use this shit i made.
Hope it's of any use. Don't Index the layer or else it'll lose translucency.

Gimp's "color to alpha" feature is made just for this. Though it made the explosion green-tinted by removing all the red. So then I copied the original image again, made "alpha to selection" from the greenish layer, inverted selection, deleted from the red layer, and used the result as a "color value" layer for the green layer. The result:

Adjust Hue/Saturation/Lightness and color-shift it towards red, then increase the saturation. That should make it as red as the original while preserving the alpha.

Paint.NET has an useful feature which can make nicely coloured graphics out of grayscale. It's the "Levels" option under the "Adjustments" menu. You can also utilize the "Curves" option to enchance the results a little bit, though this will of course, break out of the palette with paletted graphics. Still, I found them mighty useful.
