GZDoom, LZDoom and ZDoom on older Macs

Postby CBM » Sat Nov 07, 2020 6:52 am

I have an old first generation intel based iMac (early 2006),
that I want to run either GZDoom, LZDoom or ZDoom on...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac_(Intel-based)#1st_generation:_Polycarbonate_iMac

specs

1.83 GHz
(T2400 "Yonah")
Intel Core Duo
2 MB L2 cache
32 bit

would I be able to run the latest LZDoom on this old Mac?

LZDoom will work whether its GMA950 or Radeon X1600.

Whatever you try, it'll be slow as shit. That CPU runs at less than half of what a modern low end systems do and the graphics cards also won't be able to do much more than 640x480.
But the biggest obstacle may be the operating system. GZDoom hasn't had support for older OSX versions for a long time.

Ok, so ZDoom would be the best bet then

I picked it up recently for a very modest sum because I find old x86 machines interesting

Yeah honestly you're going to be heavily limited, ZDoom 2.8.1 will be the only one that machine can run. I've got a 2007 Mac Mini of similar specs, and it's in about the same boat.

LZDoom should run just fine on both of them. Won't run superbly well but it's probably better than just running ZDoom.

Only thing is LZDoom does have a higher OSX requirement than normally comes with those macs - so unless you upgraded your OS it might not even run.
