Contrary to popular belief, we are not all-knowing-all-seeing magical beings!
If you want help you're going to have to provide lots of info. Like what is your hardware, what is your operating system, what version of GZDoom/LZDoom/whatever you're using, what mods you're loading, how you're loading it, what you've already tried for fixing the problem, and anything else that is even remotely relevant to the problem.
We can't magically figure out what it is if you're going to be vague, and if we feel like you're just wasting our time with guessing games we will act like that's what you're really doing and won't help you.

[3.5.0, Debian Stretch] Lockup whenever initializing window
Things seem fine in fullscreen so far, but the game immediately becomes totally unresponsive if I try to switch to windowed or try to start windowed (the window will appear but inside will be just garbage - not random tutti-frutti but, say, if I switch desktops and switch back that area still shows what was showing in there on the previous desktop). If I try to switch to windowed the music continues playing in the background but I don't hear any switch sounds hitting Escape so I assume it's not just the video failing to render.
No crash log, I just use the kill command to get out of GZDoom. CPU and RAM don't start spiking when this happens and I don't notice any slowdown on my computer, so it's not a loop or anything.
I have tried this with my usual ini and starting from scratch (with only an edit to let it know where my IWADs are).

Setting up a Debian machine right now to debug this. Hold on.
This might be SDL 2.0.4 related (or whatever old version Debian uses).

Re: [3.5.0, Debian Stretch] Lockup whenever initializing win
Ubuntu 16.04 is using SDL 2.0.4 too but windowed and fullscreen modes work fine there. This can be desktop environment related problem. Matt, which one are you using?
EDIT: Also, Stretch is using SDL 2.0.5.

Ah, I noticed. I set it up with LXDE and there don't seem to be any issues, so yeah, please tell me what DE you have.

Weird, I've used openbox all my life and never got such an issue. What about your GPU and drivers? Do you use a composite manager, too?

What options should I choose on the following screen to match your setup?

..... no idea, sorry
It's actually a CrunchBang install from ~2013? or so where I got rid of the #!-specific stuff when the distro was discontinued and upgraded to Stretch (and had previously upgraded to Jessie) via editing sources.list. I never saw that menu and would have gotten OpenBox built into the initial installation.

Re: [3.5.0, Debian Stretch] Lockup whenever initializing win
First I just did a quick check on my system since it's Debian Stretch and Openbox happens to be loadable the same way I do Xfce. Couldn't reproduce the issue but I'm on much older Intel hardware and using the legacy branch. I would say it's probably dangerous to be mixing distros like that, even if they're from the same family, unless you mean you did a clean reinstall.
Re: [3.5.0, Debian Stretch] Lockup whenever initializing win
This problem is specific to the modern version only.
Unfortunately without the way to reproduce the issue, we cannot fix it.

Re: [3.5.0, Debian Stretch] Lockup whenever initializing win
Let's ask this, the most pertinent question of all:
@Matt: What happens if you dual-boot to a clean Stretch install and run GZDoom from there? Even if you copy your /home folder over, and only the fewest necessary files from /etc?

Could be a while before I can free up a weekend to do that... I'll try to poke around some other settings in the meantime but it might be best for everyone else to leave this alone unless and until I manage to isolate the problem further.

Whatever was going on, it has been fixed as of the release of GZDoom 3.6.0, thanks!
