Contrary to popular belief, we are not all-knowing-all-seeing magical beings!

If you want help you're going to have to provide lots of info. Like what is your hardware, what is your operating system, what version of GZDoom/LZDoom/whatever you're using, what mods you're loading, how you're loading it, what you've already tried for fixing the problem, and anything else that is even remotely relevant to the problem.

We can't magically figure out what it is if you're going to be vague, and if we feel like you're just wasting our time with guessing games we will act like that's what you're really doing and won't help you.

GZDoom Performance Issues

Post by Chloroxite »

I recently upgraded (at long last) from a toaster to a decent, mid-range PC. However, one thing I noticed when attempting to play GZDoom on my new machine was the odd performance issues that should not be occurring whatsoever, generally happening when lots of effects are displayed on screen at once, usually bringing performance down from a smooth 60+ FPS, down to a not-so-smooth 30. Effects such as blood on the ground, bullet and shell casings (to a lesser extent), smoke and particles from guns, in mods like Kriegsland and Final Doomer Plus, seem to trigger this when in large quantities.
I have no idea why this is happening, but I know it shouldn't be, as my PC should be more than able to handle it, right?

Specs:
Ryzen 3 1300x
Geforce GTX 1050
8GB of RAM

Any ideas?

No worries, it's there now.

What I suppose I should ask first, though, is did you enable any graphical effects that you didn't have enabled before, like shadowmapping, multisampling, etc?

Shadowmapping is enabled, though I didn't suspect/notice any performance hit when I did so, FXAA was also set to high, but turning it to low seemed to reduce the problem significantly. I also have AO set to high, but I don't think turning it off really improved performance, though I could always try that again.

It seems turning AO off altogether boosted performance, which is a shame because it's a really nice effect.
