Thematically Improved Mouse Cursors

Post by Nash »

Image
Spoiler: In game examples
I wasn't satisfied with the default cursors that GZDoom uses in a way that they don't really conform to the typical UI standards of looking "pointy", for lack of a better explanation. I made these in a way that they'd blend into the base games, but yet still do a good job of looking "UI-ey".

The designs I chose were meant to fit the theme of the base games: sci-fi for Doom and Strife; for Heretic and Hexen, the gloves are a nod to Warcraft and Diablo (Heretic = Corvus' leather gloves, Hexen = Fighter's gauntlet); while the spork is... well, Chex Quest is related to food, so...

Instructions: with nash_cursor.pk3 loaded, go to Mouse Options and set the "cursor" to "default". This will make sure the cursor changes according to the base game you're playing.

License: feel free to take and use these in whatever you way you see fit. You are free to redistribute, edit and use it in your projects.

Good. But why not using a glove for Doom? It's inconsistent. :P

Marisa got the idea. For Doom and Strife, they're more "tech"-ey and scifi, so a typical UI design was chosen. For Hexen and Heretic, I looked back to games like Warcraft and Diablo which used gloves/gauntlets. And Chex is just weird so whatever. :P

This should replace the mouse cursors we already have, but that's just me.

No objection. The fancy cursors (Daisy, gold wand, X, sigil, and waffle) may stay as options just in case some people have grown fond of them, but I approve of those as standard replacement. (I use the simple arrow myself.)

Daisy is not appropiate, i'd prefer a black glove. :)
Curiously ingame is brown but on the cover is black. :?

I'd have no objections, if Graf wants them, I can send a PR.

EDIT: I may want to update the Strife one. It's kinda meh. No ETA though

EDIT 2: if these are going to be in GZ, then I will need to polish them - they don't meet the "high quality standard" that most people would look up to in an official software - admittedly I scribbled all of these in like half an hour.

Maybe make the doom cursor yellow? Red cursor on red text looks indiscernible. Same problem with the strife one. Or maybe it's just me. Sorry.

I definitely like the arrows and the Strife on is particularly good IMO.

I was more thinking about a pistol for Doom.

Captain J: unfortunately no, I only did the ones that GZDoom actually uses inside game_support.pk3.
