Strife Alternate Sound Project.

Postby BouncyTEM » Tue Mar 17, 2020 12:15 pm

The Strife alternate sound project is complete! The premise is pretty simple: replace all the main sounds in Strife - i've always considered its sound design pretty weak and underwhelming on most, if not all, fronts. This is my attempt to rectify that.

Some may remember my first attempt to do this back in the early-mid 2010s. Some of those sounds were pretty good and were kept in this final file, but this is overall something new [and actually complete.]

I don't really have much else in the way of words, so, enjoy!

Mostly tested with Zdoom - I didn't really have any luck getting these converted into the doom sound format for vanilla compatability, unfortunately. :(

I like high-quality sound mods for other Doom-engine games like these, they gave me a new fresh breath of air because other games tend to get less high-quality sound mods than Doom.

Although I'm enjoying your mod already, I have some suggestions for changes:

- The acolytes' radio chatter when idle should be entirely radio chatter to make them not just easily distinguishable, but also accurate to their nature. I mean, sure, one of the acolyte's idle sound is radio chatter but the others are inconsistent.

One of them is the sound of guns loading, the other a mask breathing noise and other is evil laughing, which doesn't fit the acolytes' background at all and makes it a bit hard to consistently tell if an acolyte is near. They're not supposed to be your average soldier, they're actually a bunch of fanatic cyborg soldiers for the Order.

- The flamethrower is missing its sound when firing. DSFLSRT doesn't exist in the game files and it sounds too odd enough to be used as a firing sound for the flamethrower, so I'd suggest find a more fitting noise for the flamethrower.

- DSAGRAC3 should be used for DSMASK because to me it sounds a lot more detailed and fitting than DSMASK.
