Cathy's Ray Tube vIII.zer0 + Softy 1.5
If you are able to use GZDoom's shader system:
ScreeM now has a slider which conditions any CRT-era palette (not just DooM's) for LCDs and can also affect voxels that utilize such palettes.
Troo Cullers will add the colourmap effect from software DooM into GZDoom in a more dynamic way than Softy could.
A lot more natural and an improved colour map for the software renderer. I've exhausted this technique so this is the last Cathy's Ray Tube. I'm exploring another avenue which has a slim chance of working but I am quite pleased with this iteration regardless. Again credit goes to Sigvatr for Pal_Plus which is the basis for these wads. 'Softy' is Cathy's Ray Tube with a poor man's emulation of the skin tones that the software renderer can display, minus the colour banding. There are two versions depending on your preference- Softy.wad retains the brightness values of the affected colours and Softy Dark.wad matches their percieved luminosity. These wads aren't as accurate as having a hardware based colour map but I find them more realistic than those always over-brightened pinks. There are comparisons further down below...
Softy 1.5 adds a third option called Softy Strict which doesn't add any new colours than what Cathy's Ray Tube had.

Re: Cathy's Ray Tube - CRT Palette
I like this. A very subtle change. I will keep this around for a bit, see how it is with other maps and mods.

Cheers Hellser, I hadn't thought of that- more recent custom artwork might be designed on LCD's and look a bit off with this. PNG files should be safe though I thinkI will keep this around for a bit, see how it is with other maps and mods.

Re: Cathy's Ray Tube V2! - CRT Palette
I Really like this! The subtle accent of the reds and deepening of the blues look really nice and slick. Great Job!

Cheers Dklark. Are you referring to the old version, because I didn't think the changes to the reds were subtle anymore!

Re: Cathy's Ray Tube V3! - CRT Palette
updated remaster of SKY1 now with higher resolution combined with the previous version's colour depth increase. It was also converted to the Cathy's Ray Tube palette this time around.
This is the reason I made Cathy's Ray Tube- Truecolour images weren't affected by the Pal_Plus wad and would be left looking too bright. Nevermind that most people using that palette were likely to increase the brightness and make stuff like skies further overblown. Cathy's Ray Tube is an attempt to keep the colour shift from Pal_Plus without the darkening/desaturation so that the player can adjust those in the display options themselves. This ensures that high colour graphics will stay balanced with the rest of the palette.

Re: Cathy's Ray Tube vIII.zer0 + Softy
I really like your take on DooMs palette with Dark Softy. Especially Cacodemons, Pinkies and Barons Of Hell look much better.
Would you be willing to give similar treatment to Heretic palette? While I like gameplay, its looks always seemed to me bit garish. So I think it would benefit even more greatly than DooM from bit visual enhancement, dont you think?

Me watching that animation flip between CRT & Softy:
"What colour is this demon? Is it pink or gold?"
"What colour is this demon? Is it pink or gold?"

Re: Cathy's Ray Tube vIII.zer0 + Softy
Thanks Patrik,
I only own the shareware version of Heretic so I won't be able to. That blue water is terrible nowadays though
Nash,
Wait till you see the colour of it's eggs
Funnily enough I have a better Softy almost complete (I just have to un-dither the colour map) that might be less 'golden'. I won't know until I can recheck though.
