Hey y'all

Image

I'm Gary Gritness. I'm an electro-funk artist and Doom fanatic.

I've been lurking on the Zdoom forum for years, I was even in
contact with Kyle873 to make new DoomRPG music.

As a love letter to the game and its community, I made complete
reworking Bobby Prince's music with my Roland Juno-60 and TR-606,
that is released as Cassete Tape, and of course, .WAD file.

It adds a cool, powerful early 80s sound to it, while staying as true
to the original spirit and coherence of the original and blending just right in-game.

· DOWNLOAD THE .WAD FILE

For those interested, there's an ultra-limited, 36-unit run DIY Cassette Tapes issued on my Slikk Tapes label.

Each booklet is unique and contains a map of one of the original 36 Ultimate Doom levels.

· COP A TAPE IF YOU WANT IT

Coming back the .WAD, on top of the original Ultimate Doom, I like to play some of these
fantastic Doom I megawads that are a good fit to this remade music:

- Doom The Way iD Did - Classic Episode - Knee Deep in Zdoom
- Phobos: Anomaly Reborn - Eternal Torture - Invasion

And finally for how I like to play Doom and my favorite WADS:

- I use Zdoom.
- I play either on HMP or UV, always Pistol Start.
- For eye candy, the combination of Smooth Doom and Nashgore.
- Sound Caulking's PC sounds add just the right detail.
- My weapon of choice is the SSG (surprise, surprise.)
- My favorite Megawads are:
Requiem, Speed Of Doom, Simplicity, Congestion 1024,
Scythe 2, Hell Revealed, Alien Vendetta, Eternal Doom.
- For gameplay mods, I like DoomRL Arsenal and DoomRPG.

A huge THANK YOU to the whole Doom community,

Tear on,
-Gary G

I love the general feeling of this. I'm going to have to play through Ultimate Doom again with all these.

This is exactly what I've been looking for!

I had an idea for a Wild Weasel's Terrorists/Agent Diaz and Drive/Hotline Miami inspired mod with a bright colorful palette to it . I have thought to myself for a while that I'm surprised no one has made a NES sounding or 80's synth sounding Doom remix yet, and here we are!

Thanks guys.

Carbine Dioxide, it is indeed a funny coincidence !
I think there might be NES type of stuff laying around,
but my scope was very different on this.

Try and blast these LOUD and I think you'll get what I mean.
It's not about "retro", it's just about sounding thick as hell.

This is why I mentioned Smooth Doom as well.
I tried to do a music equivalent of that visual mod.

When listening to this, the music towards the end of VEGA Processing in Doom 2016 comes to mind.

I was also kind of looking for an Black Sabbath/Metallica heavy metal kind of sound track for Doom. Sure, there's a crap load of metal tracks out there, but they all go a little to much with it.

Gary Gritness is legitness.

Haven't listened to everything yet, but it sounds really great so far. I'd love to see this paired with a few other small mods to make the game feel even more Carpenter-esque. Not sure exactly what, but a new palette and maybe slightly different monster sprites would be a start.

"A little too much with it":

I second that emotion, even if it's a strictly personal thing.

But that's why apart from the first track on wich
I added a solo just for good measure,
I left the rest stock and concentrated on
stacking Juno tracks and tuning the 606
just right, adding the rights doses of
basic effects just to add new shine to the material,
wich is masterful in its coherence and variety.

I would totally do an early 80s metal joint ( I would personally go
with the sound of something like Stormtroopers of Death).

The problem with Heavy-Metal is that only a third of the soundtrack
is actually rock. The other 2/3rd are John Carpenter type stuff, one
third of it not having actual drum grooves.
Making those 'metal' sounds off and forced to me.

Wich is why I tried to find a production style that would
give a close experience to the vanilla music, only richer and nicer.

Oh, I'm talking about a whole other sound track that could be heavy metal based, your's is perfect the way it is. :P

Yeah, from what I've heard, the more atmospheric tracks like E1M8 and E2M2 work better in this style than the rock/metal tracks since you get those nice Carpenter-y drones. That's probably just my personal taste, though.

Honestly to me Doom always was the Sci-Fi game with Carpenter type music.

When they hired Bobby Prince to do straight rock, he did Duke Nukem 3D.
