I thought most of Duke's rockier songs were Lee Jackson's work, not Bobby's, where Bobby's contributions to the soundtrack were the more ambient tracks like Taking The Death Toll and Spook.

Not bad, it has a late 80's sci-fi vibe to it.

I really like the texture of the instruments and the general idea behind this. I do kind of wish you'd taken some artistic liberty with the song arrangement though, and made some of them more eerie. Maybe even analyze the work of composers for Carpenter's films and slip in a few of their distinct quirks.

Funny you should say that, cause the first track on the Cassette version actually
contains a new solo just for good measure:

But regarding the rest, that would have gone completely against the whole purpose of this remix.
I personally can't stand dubious "re-arrangements" of classic soundtracks, even worse when they
just "try to add a few things to steer it into a another direction".

To me, either you do a full-on, japanese type "Arrange Mode" that is barely
recognizable (and not to be used in-game), either you just mix it to sound bigger.

To me it's just like remastering: I can't stand when they fuck with the
editing in the process. I just like the shit to the same, only nicer.

And regarding the Carpenter side of things: his actual composing
style would totally clash with Bobby Prince's. Lots and lots of major
stuff, screaming "80s" in your face.

What's impressive to me on the Doom soundtrack is how all the tracks
track still blend together using subtle tricks. For example, the ambiant
tracks will use a 12 bar progression. So you don't feel like,
"oh, that's gonna be some ambiant stuff" right away.

But I imagine some of the 80's vibe might clash oddly with the 90's inspired metal, like E3M1, which is Pantera's Mouth For War esque. E3M3 also comes to mind, which is like Slayer's Behind the Crooked Cross.

What I think when it comes to sound tracks, especially something like this, which kind of suits one subject/topic, I find that maybe mixing some different genre of music with this vibe might seem better. At least, throw in some different genres for faster paced levels that might include drums, or guitar.

I honestly don't know what I'm saying anymore, but I gotta go to work now.

Well, it's actually more challenging to limit yourself to a set number of voices and instruments
and make everything work out of that frame.

The reward is huge: identity.

For example, there's tons of Organs in the General Midi set.
One could argue it would have been cool to have some Deep Purple type stuff,
or some gloomy organ stuff for the darker Hell levels.

But Price purposedly reduced the amount of instruments to create coherence,
and that's what I really like about this OST, there's a definite direction.

But of course, YMMV, 2 Each is own, and so forth ! 8-)

When it comes to Doom's soundtrack I consider myself a purist. I play with SC-55 FLAC recordings and I have to admit, this is some very incredible work. I was initially put off by the more rock-oriented tracks but as I played on I came to realize that the renditions were increidble. I really appreciate that you used the original MIDIs by Prince, I share your philosophy on remasters and hate when they fuck up the original works. I cannot wait for Doom II if you ever get around to doing that.

I actually checked out your other works and I like the stuff you do, I'm actually going to purchase your realeases as it somehow reminds me of Kraftwerk (which I am a huge fan of) in some aspects. I actually like the compositions and they sound very crisp and professional.

I look forward to seeing more from you!

I hope nobody kills me for bumping this...

Just had the chance to finally listen to these tracks ingame and I gotta say it's absolutely mindblowing. Possibly the best soundtrack remaster I have ever had the pleasure of listening to in Doom. This should get more attention and I hope Gary will eventually also provide the same pack for Doom II.

Thanks a lot for making this!
