DoomGals - an A.I. helper mod for Doom (also Heretic/Hexen compatible!)
UPDATE (v1.1) - Changes to Iris and Cynthia's powerup abilities, HUD adjustments and bugfixes (see changelog) MAJOR UPDATE (v1) - The fourth and final DoomGal has been added! Also new abilities, bugfixes galore, balance changes, and some more Hexen/Heretic compatibility
Hi, my name is Substance20. Some of you have probably seen me on Twitter occasionally posting weird anime art of Doom demons anthropomorphized (is that even a word?) into a bunch of girls, the most well-known of which is Caco-chan.
Well, now you can have those same girls fight by your side in the actual game!
DoomGals is a helper mod that allows you to summon up to four demon girls at any time to rip and tear by your side; each girl has her own set of attacks and unique abilities that grant the player powerups, so choose which one you think would be best to help you finish a level...or summon all four for maximum carnage if you're up against a slaughtermap and need all the help you can get!
(v1.1)
* Iris and Cynthia's powerup abilities have been reworked to now drop items instead of directly affecting the player; see the Item list and Movelist for details
* Iris and Cynthia's respective powerup durations have been reduced from 30 seconds down to 20 seconds
* The girls now have additional immunity to the following helper mods:
--> Bimmy's Vivian
--> Untitled's D-Radys Class Allies (based on SHOgun/Toasty's D-Radys Class mod)
--> An upcoming mini helper mod for Iron Snail (this doubles as a teaser, I promise)
* All Doomgals' self-respawn timers have been corrected to 120 seconds (4200 tics) down from 210 (7200 tics)
* The life count display now correctly scales with aspect ratio instead of being forced into 400x300
* A couple of sprite name conflicts with Colorful Hell and Brutal Doom have been addressed (hopefully! Never know when another will show up)
(08-16-2020 hotfix)
* The Mobile Phone inventory item has been consolidated into one universal item and will always be given to the player regardless of class. Previously, there were two separate phones meant for either the Doom or Raven IWADs (Hexen and Heretic), but since DoomGals uses the player actor class to detect the IWAD being used, the mod will not spawn the Mobile Phone in your inventory if you happen to be playing a mod that replaces the default player class (shoutouts to Untitled for catching this oversight!).
(08-15-2020 hotfix)
* The DoomGals are now immune to the following effects from several Heretic/Hexen weapons and artifacts:
--> The powered-up Fire Mace's instant kill attack
--> The Morph Ovum (it's called DoomGals not DoomNuggets)
--> The Disc of Repulsion's radius thrust
--> The Banishment Device's monster teleportation
(v1.0)
* The fourth and final DoomGal, Amaryllis the Arachno-tan, can now be summoned in combat! See the Characters/Movelist section for more details.
* Cynthia and Iris have been given brand new combat abilities! See the Characters/Movelist section for more details.
* New item: Mobile Phone! Use it to summon the girls to your side if they have been left stationary; see the Items section for details.
* New Help screens are now available! Press F1 to access them.
* The DoomGals can now spawn directly from your position instead of spawning from a mobile phone projectile.
* The DoomGals now have damage immunity vs. other companion mods, including:
--> Untitled's Touhou Allies
--> Veronica's companions (Ralsei, Susie and Isabelle)
--> Skelegant's Gholazons, Meatlings, Cosmic Muscle marines and Frylock
--> Bimmy's Cordie
* All girls now have a baseline 1000 HP, but were also given different damage reduction values; see the Characters/Movelist section for more details.
* Cynthia's Cheer and Primrose's Chocolate Cake abilities have been revamped; see the Characters/Movelist section for more details.
* Cynthia's Triple Fireblast attack has been removed, but to compensate her flaming kick melee can now toss out two flames instead of one.
* The Stay/Follow function has been heavily retooled to remove several unintentional behaviors; see the How to Play section for details.
* A (non-fatal) divide-by-zero ACS error involving the girls' HP counter displays resetting on respawn has been resoooooooooooooooooooolved.
* The DoomGals' respawn timer has been normalized to 120 seconds in order to remove the regular Nightmare respawn RNG.
* Hoagies can now be thrown from a greater distance and have new SFX, but have been nerfed to heal only 200HP down from 500.
* Primrose's Plasma Geyser can now hurt enemies immune to radius damage.
* Primrose's Death Slap and Lunging Death Slap now function as explosive projectiles which gives them more effective range than before, but have also had their damage reduced to compensate.
* Iris' projectile damage has been buffed to keep her more in line with the other girls, as she also possesses zero damage reduction.
* Iris and Cynthia's movespeeds have been increased slightly to compensate for their lower defense. This also includes Iris' float speed.
* The player has been given enhanced invulnerability to the girls' attacks in order to address issues with Hexen removing the damage immunity when traversing between level hubs.
(v0.8)
* New Follow/Stay Use action for all DoomGals! See the How to Play section for instructions.
* Primrose now has a new passive ability similar to Cynthia! See the Characters/Movelist section for more details.
* You can now collect Hoagi--I mean, MEATBREAD in Hexen and Heretic! See the Items section for details.
* Caco-chan now shoots projectiles more aggressively at range, and her melee range has also been increased slightly to account for her small radius.
* Primrose is now immune to radius damage to offset her lack of ranged attacks, and her melee range has also been increased slightly.
* A glitch involving the Imp variants in Hard Doom inheriting Primrose's sprites due to having similar filenames has been removed.
HOW TO PLAY:
You are given a set of four demon orbs in your inventory at the start of a map. Use the Previous/Next Item keys to choose between the orbs and the Activate Item key to throw out a mobile phone (kids these days eh?), which will consume the chosen orb. After a short while, the phone will ring and summon the Doom Gal corresponding to the color of the orb used.
The girls will automatically follow the player and even teleport next to them if they're too far away or out of sight, and will actively seek and target enemies in their vicinity.
Be warned, however: the girls are not invulnerable to either your attacks or the enemy's, and they will get temporarily knocked out if they take too much damage! Collect hoagies from the environment and feed them to the girls to keep them in good shape. Should a DoomGal lose all of their HP, you must wait 90 seconds for them to respawn.
It is also possible to command each DoomGal to Stay and hold their position, or continue to Follow your movements by pressing the Use key next to them. They will still be able to attack enemies in Stay mode, allowing you to set them up near chokepoints to attack enemies from a safe position or prevent them from walking into traps and ambushes.
The DoomGals will also temporarily enter a ghost state when being commanded to Stay or Follow, allowing the player to pass through them and preventing players from getting trapped in tight corridors and dead ends.
Note that the girls cannot dodge projectiles or teleport to your location when in Stay mode. If the DoomGals were somehow left behind in a certain part of the map in Stay mode and thus unable to teleport to you, use the Mobile Phone to summon them from afar and set them to Follow mode again.
ITEM LIST:
Spoiler:
Demon Girl Orbs
The items used to summon the Doom Gals. They are given to the player at the start of every map, and can only be used once. Each color corresponds to a particular Doom Gal; see the Characters/Movelist section for details.
Hoagie
Caco-chan's favorite food, Hoagie Helpers replace the Health Bonus item. Each one restores 5 health on pickup (up to a maximum of 200) and adds a Hoagie Helper item to your inventory. Hoagie Helpers can be thrown at the girls to heal them for 200 health, so make sure you keep a few in your pack for emergencies!
Hoag--I mean, MAGICK MEATBREAD
Hark! This bountiful meatbread from of old hath the power to soothe yon grievous wounds upon consumption, having been blessed by strange beings from the aether. But consider thou and see, for it doth be able to heal 25 points of lifeblood on use, up to 200 lifeblood. As well, it is able to be shared with yon fair maidens to heal them for 500 lifeblood apiece. This wondrous bakemeat replaces the Quartz Flask, but alas! It cannot be used to heal thyself in the blink of an eye when thou playest on but the lightest of all difficulties, for thou must also consider the wellbeing of thine handmaidens.
Mobile Phone
The latest iPhobos model straight from posh Pandemonium will allow you to summon stationary DoomGals to your side and get them to follow you! This phone can be used even when the girls are completely out of line-of-sight, but will only work on DoomGals that have been commanded to hold their position with the Stay/Follow key. Note that due to GZDoom's hard limitations, this item only has a max range of 16383 map units.
Lightning Orb
Iris will drop this for you after executing two Judgment Bolts. Picking it up will temporarily increase your movement and weapon firing/usage speeds for 20 seconds.
Rage Orb
Cynthia will drop this for you after executing two Scatter Fireblasts. Picking it up will temporarily increase your melee damage by 10x and weapon damage by 4x for 20 seconds.
Chocolate Cake
Primrose will drop this for you after executing two Plasma Geysers. Picking it up will heal you for 40HP if injured, but unlike Hoagies it cannot heal the player past 100HP.
Ammo Satchel
Amaryllis will drop this for you after firing her Dual Coilguns twice. Functions similarly to a Doom Backpack, except it also works in Raven games (note: not tested with Strife).
CHARACTERS/MOVELIST:
Spoiler:
Universal Moves:
Teleport: A summoned Doom Gal will teleport to your immediate position if you walk too far away and she loses sight of you. Don't worry, she won't telefrag you (or anything else for that matter), but take care when moving in tight hallways because they can block you if you linger for too long.
Self-Revival: A Doom Gal is capable of reviving herself if she loses all of her HP, but you'll need to wait 120 seconds for her to recover. In order to prevent the girls from being KOed, feed them Hoagie Helpers to replenish their health!
IRIS (A.K.A. Caco-chan)(summoned with the Blue Orb)
Spoiler:
Defense Rating: 1.0 (normal)
A spunky demon girl from the Warrens who caught sight of Doomguy once and thought that he was so cool, she immediately fell head over heels in love with him. Too bad he's practically celibate, but it's the thought that counts. Loves hoagies and AOR music. Often found messing with an electric guitar and Audacity in a concerted effort to become the next Eddie Van Halen. Adopted a pet rabbit from Earth after she learned how Doomguy lost his.
Rapid Lightning Shot: Caco-chan spits out a series of small, fast lightning balls. She will only use this at close range; deals minimal damage but has a rapid rate of fire.
Lightning Ball: Caco-chan spits out a mid-sized lightning ball like the rest of her Cacodemon relatives do. Respectable damage; only used at mid to long range.
Super Lightning Ball: Caco-chan fires a huge lightning blast that explodes for splash damage. Only used when at long range, so make sure to give her room to work!
Judgment Bolt: Caco-chan selects three targets in close proximity to each other and summons a bolt of lightning on top of each one, causing severe damage and massive explosions strong enough to hurt even monsters immune to them. Maybe try not to piss her off eh?
Rapid Punches: Taught to her by the bro-est of Revenants, Iris unleashes a flurry of hard right and left hooks at melee range before backing away.
Hypercharge!: When not using her lightning to fry bad guys or recharge her electronics (it saves a lot on electric bills), Caco-chan is capable of using it to charge up the player, increasing both movement and firing speed for 20 seconds. She will only use this ability to drop a Lightning Orb item if the player is nearby and after casting two Judgment Bolts. Watch your puny chaingun get turned into THE CHAINGUN™ with this powerup!
*(note that the double firing speed ability does not work with certain modded weapons, although you will still retain increased movement speed and possibly other actions such as reloading)
CYNTHIA the imp(summoned with the Gold Orb)
Spoiler:
Defense Rating: 1.0 (normal)
Iris' best friend and big sister figure. Often acts as her voice of reason, which means she has the arduous task of smacking Iris on the head and dragging her away by the collar whenever she comes up with an incredibly stupid idea. Expert gymnast, cheerleader and kickboxer. Loves dogs and owns a miniature Pinky named Kino, who stubbornly refuses to be housebroken. Aspiring future supermodel. Often mistaken for a certain other imp girl, much to her confusion.
Rapid Fireballs: Unlike her Imp brethren, Cynthia puts her martial arts skills to good use by kicking out fireballs instead of using her hands. Claims she saw it in an anime once.
Large Fireball: At long ranges, Cynthia will occasionally kick out a larger, more damaging fireball capable of taking out weaker enemies in one hit. Taught to her by a Mancubus who has a crush on her.
Scatter Fireblast: Cynthia will sometimes kick out a huge fireball that explodes into multiple gouts of flame that cover the floor, dealing continuous damage until they fizzle out. Only used after performing 20 attacks in a row.
Flaming Kicks: Cynthia delivers hard hitting kicks in close combat, which have more range than a standard Imp claw attack. Occasionally she will do a strong roundhouse kick that leaves patches of damaging flame on the ground before backing away. She ain't called "Cynthia" for nothing...
Cheer!: Cynthia will occasionally cheer the player on, which grants them increased melee and firearm damage for 20 seconds. She will only use this ability to drop a Rage Orb item if the player is nearby and within line of sight, and after using two Scatter Fireblasts. Have fun with your SSG!
PRIMROSE, Ojou-sama of Hell(summoned with the Red Orb)
Spoiler:
Defense Rating: 1.5 (50% damage reduction)
A rich noblegirl from uptown Erebus who goes to the same school as Iris. One would think her to be the insufferable type, but she's actually very polite and sugary sweet--except she once cratered the Slough of Despair with a single punch when someone called her friends a bunch of degenerate weebs in front of her. Loves tea, baking, dumbbells and 90s boy bands (she even owns the entire Backstreet Boys catalogue). Somewhat height conscious.
Plasma Burst: Hell's children are taught how to channel demonic energies into plasma from an early age. Being a prodigy, Primrose figured out how to make it explode on impact.
Slap of Death: Primrose, not one for wanton displays of violence, prefers to slap sense into wayward individuals instead. Given her muscle strength though, it often has lethal results. Can send lightweight monsters reeling back with each hit, and has splash damage.
Lunging Death Slap: For when Primrose needs to reach out and touch someone, painfully. She will use this to quickly close the gap between herself and her target. Has slightly more damage than a regular slap.
Plasma Geyser: Primrose has loads of patience. The ground beneath her exploding into a bright flash of lethal plasma is what happens when she loses it. Deals a huge amount of splash damage in a large radius, can send enemy monsters AND corpses flying (the player and the DoomGals are immune to this effect) and can even hurt monsters normally immune to splash damage. She'll usually ask if you're OK afterwards though, what a kind young lady.
Chocolate Cake: Primrose, ever eager to show off her culinary talents, will occasionally drop triple-tiered Chocolate Cakes for the player to use. Each cake can heal up to 40HP, so watch your calorie intake! She will only drop cakes for the player when they are in close proximity and after using two Plasma Geysers in a row.
AMARYLLIS the Arachno-Tan(summoned with the Green Orb)
Spoiler:
Defense Rating: 1.75 (25% damage reduction)
A shy, bespectacled cyborg girl who serves as library assistant at Iris' school, her arachnotron chassis was custom built by her zealously doting Spider Mastermom using parts ordered online from Realm667. Her soft-spoken facade and love of classic literature belie a Slavaboo gamer girl fearsome enough to cow the most obnoxious tryhards, with her demure mannerisms giving way to trashtalking bouts fiery enough to make even Arch-Viles shudder. Has mild fujoshi tendencies.
Twin Autocannons: Most other spiderminds have one cannon. Intent on making Amaryllis stand out from the rest, Spider Mastermom installed TWO cannons on her daughter's chassis. Moderately accurate at long distances, and can rip enemies to shreds at midrange.
Plasma Grenades: When enemies get a little closer than usual, Amy busts out her Arcane Dimension™ explosives (and sometimes expletives) using her own custom-built grenade pods. Launches a pair of bouncing plasma bombs in two volleys.
Dual Coilguns: Amy loves shooters so much, she asked her mom if she could be a sniper one day. Installing a pair of high velocity magnetized launchers on her chassis was her mom's response. Fires twin beams that pierce through multiple enemies for huge damage.
Repulsor Burst: In the event that enemies get a little too personal, Amaryllis uses concentrated psychic energy to assert her introversion. Capable of pushing monsters away while dealing a minor amount of splash damage, this is Amy's only melee attack. In no way, shape or form named after the fact that she's a Mahvel addict, we promise.
Ammunition Cache: What's a girl gotta do with no BOOLET? Amy, being an engineering buff herself, modified her chassis to be able to produce her own ammunition and will even share some with the player. She will only drop this item if the player is close by and after firing her Coilguns twice. Functions like a backpack, doubling the player's ammo capacity.
TO-DO LIST
Spoiler:
- Make a tutorial map, maybe
KNOWN ISSUES
* Iris' Hyperspeed powerup will not affect certain modded weapons' fire rates, but will still give the player increased movement speed. This is mainly due to certain weapons having numerous 1-tic animation frames, and as such Hyperspeed may not affect weapons from mods such as Smooth Doom.
* Deep damaging liquid floors and instant-death pits can end up removing the girls from the map completely, which will disable them for the rest of the run.
* The girls can and will sometimes get stuck on certain linedefs such as corners, stair/lift edges and certain depressed fake bridge platforms such as the ones in Ancient Aliens; this may occasionally cause short and narrow lifts to malfunction. Concessions were made to prevent this behavior, but the solution may not be 100% effective.

Seen this on some discord server and i gotta say, you're good at doom modding! Those two companions are unique to one and other and fights well. I really wonder if they could help doomguy in some mass-destructive maps like nuts2.
Oh my, that's lewd! Tho such NSFW stuff are obviously not allowed in this forum.
EDIT: I accidentally spawned Caco-chan close to the corner. She spawned there, obviously did not move.
She easily could teleport out of there, sure. But she won't do anything at all unless she teleport out of this place and all. Or maybe make her hitbox small as Cynthia's?

holy shit you absolute madman! I can't belive someone actually did it. Gonna play it with DoomLess monster pack and let these girls kick some marine asses heheh
also can't wait for Baroness to be added and maybe that arachno-girl too... maybe? please?
Really like this mod so far, the only "complain" i have is that while playing with HardDoom, one of the imp types gets replaced with Primrose.
One of the things i really like is that they can actually die and then you'll have to wait, that makes you have to care atleast a little (since they're so powerful) for them.
If i can leave a suggestion would be to add some options to the girls, like a damage/health slider, the option to make their stay limited in some way (they could have limited lives or just stay for a certain ammount of time and then have a cooldown), but i don't know how hard it is to make so...
Wish you the best
Skelegant wrote:Nice to see your modding work finally out there for folks to enjoy! It's been a joy seeing your sprites take form and a pleasure to help out
Thanks! I couldn't have done it if you didn't show me the ropes honestly.
QuickWolfPT wrote:Really like this mod so far, the only "complain" i have is that while playing with HardDoom, one of the imp types gets replaced with Primrose.
Thanks for catching this, I took a look at Hard Doom and one of the imp replacements uses the same sprite filenames as Primrose (PRIM) so I changed Primrose's asset names and it should be good now.
As for the difficulty suggestions, I might include variants for those in the future but for now, it's still quite hard to play even with the girls helping you since they can die quite easily in enemy-heavy or slaughter mapsets (even a single chaingunner, mancubus or arachnotron can give Caco-chan a lot of trouble and even solo her if she gets unlucky), and if the player is aggressive then they will still receive the brunt of enemy attention.
this is a pretty nice mod! I think I like these the most out of all the "Companion" mods, kinda wish there was a way to keep the Health Bonus item, or have it spawn alongside the sandwich thing, also, do you mind if I convert the demon girls sprites into Zandronum-compatible Player skins?
What a lovely mod! it's definitely one i'm keeping.
Would be nice if the companions didn't blocked player movement though, but overall i really liked all of the companions
Also, looks like the thread name is slightly outdated (Link says the version is 0.8, while the thread says it's 0.75)
