Brutal Doom 64 with Obaddon

Post by kipo »

Hello, for me Brutal Doom 64 was awesome, but saddly after finishing the main game there was not much else to do. Playing the maps made for regular doom with brutal doom 64 assets was not much of an option since you'll be missing the new stuff like the nightmare imps, and it would be replaying the same doom maps after all. That is until I found the awesome addon for Oblige, called Obaddon, which makes Oblige generate levels with so much quality and customization, that I figured this would be the perfect way to finally play "new" maps/megawads for brutal doom 64.

So I made this mutator for brutal doom 64, and and addon for oblige/obaddon to be able to generate maps with the new brutal doom 64 monsters and some more. I'm sharing it in case somebody finds it useful.

My brutal doom 64 Mutator Features:
- Adds the new monsters from Project Nightmare (Nightmare Cacodemons, Nightmare Spectres, The Annihilator, all credits to Project Nightmare).
- Adds the new Outcast monsters plus some more (Nightcrawler, Acid Demon, Stalker, Nightmare Elemental, SMG Guy, all credits to the Doom 64 Absolution MP project by SFJake, I just gave them the brutal treatment and fancy effects, oh and the smg guy is my adaptation from the pulse rifle guy from the same project).
- Adds a new custom monster: BruiserN64 from SunMadcat (I just gave it the brutal doom 64 treatment and fancy effects).
- Adds Doom 64 textures, all thanks to the Super Doom 64 mod (from StrikerMan780 who did all the code for texture replacing in his mod).
- Adds "Reload" to the weapons in classical mode (not really like the tactical mode, more like the regular brutal doom, my own implementation).

My mutator is standalone, so you don't need brutal doom 64 files since they are all included.

My Oblige addon (you need this file for the new monsters to appear on the maps - you must enable the addon in oblige and also check the "BD64_2" tab):
- All these monsters can appear on the maps: Zombiemarine, NightmareImp, NightmareCacodemon, NightmareSpectre, Annihilator, Motherdemon, Nightcrawler, AcidDemon, Stalker, NightmareElemental, SMGGuy, Bruiser.

My advice when playing some brutal doom 64 with oblige is to use the Dark ambient music pack (https://www.moddb.com/mods/brutal-doom/ ... music-pack), to really set the doom 64 mood.

Note: if you don't know what Oblige or Obaddon is, follow this link: https://github.com/caligari87/ObAddon (if you don't want to invest too much time figuring out the Obbadon options, this is my config file: https://sharemods.com/dup1xa0v1ktk/CONFIG.txt.html)

EDIT:
As an example to jump right into the action, here is a 4 level wad generated from oblige with obaddon and my addon:

To play you only need my brutal doom 64 mutator and this wad for the levels. Enjoy!

EDIT2:
Updated mutator link with some updates, and as a bonus, here's another 4 level wad generated:

I'm not so certain about using sharemods.com as a file hoster since every download comes with a detection of a fraudulent website, courtesy of Malwarebytes. Maybe consider using anything else?
Also, which go in the OBLIGE addons folder, bd64gamev2_ObAddon.pk3 or ObAddon_BD64v2.pk3?

Also, health counter's a bit messed up.

Sorry for the confussion, the Oblige addon is ObAddon_BD64v2.pk3. The other file is the Brutal doom base file + my modifications.

About sharemods, I've never had any problem, but I'm also using Adblock Plus maybe that's why. Which other do you recommend? so I can upload some mirrors.

if not dropbox, filedropper also works wonders.

The mod is nice, but why do all the light sources have those dark squares around them?

Just a small update to my Brutal doom 64 mutator, I added some stuff missing from super doom 64 like the darker palette, added the texture warp effect for the nightmare elemental, and added animations to the keycard doors and computer screens.
Updated llink is in the first post, and a small bonus, here's another 4 level wad generated with Obaddon and my addon:

How is it messed up? The number to the right is supposed to be the sprint but it's only usabe in tactical mode, which I don't care much.

it looks like "10100" with two different numbers overlayed over eachother.

I don't see that at all, does it happen to you with regular Brutal Doom 64?

The one you posted? Yeah. With the empty three slots to the right, you can make one seperately for stamina.

This is probably a longshot but here it goes...

Is there any way to modify this or make another addon that allows Oblige to make maps that actually use DOOM 64 textures? Cause as it stands it makes amazing maps, but it's DOOM 64 enemies, weapons and pickups against plain DOOM 2 map textures. Doesn't take advantage of any of DOOM 64's textures. I've tried everything I can think of, multiple old DOOM 64 wads, modifying load orders, hell I even tried to replease all the map textures in the DOOM 2 iwad with DOOM 64 textures but that didn't work because the names didn't match up I assume.

Maybe there would be a way to make Obaddon use the iwad from the DOOM 64 rerelease? :| I'd be willing to put in work to make this work. I REALLY want to generate DOOM 64 maps as DOOM 64 is my favorite DOOM game of all time but I'm out of ideas.

The easiest way I can think of is to create a TEXTURES add-on that remaps Doom 2's vanilla textures with Doom 64 textures instead:
https://zdoom.org/wiki/TEXTURES

This would have the added benefit of also working with non-Oblige maps.

The more time-consuming and difficult method would be to create a new textures add-on within Oblige. For example, ObAddon currently has an "Epic Textures Pack Mod" add-on that is available that allows custom textures from a pack to be used. The difficulty is that you have to specify how each texture will be used for different parts of the map generated, but the advantage is that it allows a lot more control over how the textures are used.
