Markiplier's Doomed Journey

Post by MetroidJunkie »

Still very much a work in progress because I'm still trying to come up with ideas to change the weapons and items with as well as somewhere to the key placement on the HUD rather than just shoving them in the corner but I figure Christmas is as good a time as any to release what I have at this point in time.

List of weapons/items changed:

Code: Select all

Health Bonus replaced with cup of Green Tea (Inspired by Tea Party Simulator)
Stimpack replaced with Pain Killers (Inspired by Penumbra: Necrologue)
Medikit replaced with Folder with Photos of Kittens (Inspired by his kitten gag in Octodad Deadliest Catch)
Armor Bonus replaced with Gimp Mask (Inspired by Binding of Isaac)
Blue Armor replaced with Spherical Addon (Inspired by Off)
SoulSphere replaced with Music Box (Inspired by Five Nights at Freddy's 2)
Megasphere replaced with Tiny Box Tim (Inspired by his gag in Amnesia The Four Horsemen)
Light Goggles replaced with Flashlight (Inspired by Slender)
Berserk Pack replaced with Blacksmith Key (Inspired by his blacksmith gag in Eleusis)
Invulnerability Sphere replaced with Warfstache (Inspired by the character)
Chainsaw replaced with Surgeon Saw (Inspired by Surgeon Simulator)
Chaingun replaced with Minigun Misao Head (Inspired by Misao)
Rocket Launcher replaced with OctoBomber (Inspired by Octodad Deadliest Catch)
For the most part, this is purely aesthetic, except the Flashlight uses Power Torch rather than the default so that it looks more like a flashlight and the OctoBomber has more damage and radius than the rocket launcher at the cost of being very random with its aiming and the bombs themselves acting like grenades.

Of course, OpenGL is required since it uses 3D models, I've only tested it with GZDoom.

Any feedback and suggestions for the other items would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm... almost unplayable. So, I guess it's an accurate reflection of Markiplier's videos. :P

If you mean the Octobomber weapon, then it's pretty much a reflection of the near unplayable status that is Octodad.

Wait, does this mean I get to play Doom with Markiplier rambling like a fool the whole time?

Yep, it does.

Well I mean, I don't have anything against the guy. It's just hearing the same one-liners again and again drove me mad after just E1M1, so maybe find a few more and have them play using the $RANDOM SNDINFO thing. Otherwise he quickly becomes a Germanic-Asian Gex.

Seems Markiplier has a nasty tendency to devour the entire screen space, even at 1080p. It also got me thinking, if Markiplier played this, would he paste his facecam over his facecam?

EDIT: And would he eventually start yelling at himself to be quiet?

Thanks for the tip with the $RANDOM, I'll have to grab some extra sound clips to vary it up a bit. That's weird about the facecam pic taking up the screen, though, I play on 1080p and it seems fine to me.

Spoiler:

If there's a way to make drawmugshot and drawbar scale automatically with the resolution, it would be helpful.

Do you have stretch status bar/HUD enabled?

Meanwhile, this is amusing for a first start. The Octobomber is funny.

Yes, that was the main area of unplayability. In the room with the troopers on the platforms in MAP01 (HMP so no imps on the ground) I managed to kill myself three times but not one single trooper died. So, it's a useless weapon. It's kind of like those pointless novelty Christmas gifts: you know, the ones that initially seem funny but you know you will never even look at them ever again; a waste of time and money.

As for the rest of the mod, I don't really ever see me playing a mod that brings one of those annoying YouTube "personalities" into the game. Markiplier is pretty standard fare for those kind of people. He screaches into his mic, over-peaking 'til the sound is distorted, he yells trite nonsense in an annoying voice, he replaces humour with over-use of the f-bomb and generally has that annoying "oh I'm so funny" low-quality smug style of presentation typical of these YouTube stars that peddle their so-called entertainment. So, even without the useless weapon, the mod is, for me, virtually unplayable because it's an accurate reflection of the source material. :P

Says you, man. I find his laughter contagious and his style of speaking amusing dramatic.

That's more or less a personal preference so you're going to just fundamentally dislike this mod no matter what.

You are both correct of course. Quite simply, I find the inspiration for the mod annoying and of minimal entertainment value so a mod based on it will get a similar reaction from me. But, hey, I hope you enjoy making it and that some people enjoy playing it. :)

Since we've established the core of the mod you don't like, how do the 3D models for the replaced things look at least? I started experimenting with a better light baking method in Blender that seems to give cleaner looking shadows than the previous method that made it look all grainy and noisy. I even baked in "Toon" shading (So basically cel shading) to the Octopus arm to make it look more cartoony.

I liked most of those aspects of the mod. I'll be honest, I didn't really know what the octopus arm was meant to be the first time I tried it (I thought some sort of weird brown tongue or something - though that didn't explain its positioning) and I couldn't figure out how it related to the randomly aimed bombs. Now that I know what it is, it looks about right.

I liked the chaingun model. I think the skin could still do with a bit of work on the plate that holds the barrels together but I really liked its action/animation and the fact that it is centred.

To be fair, most of the custom content is done pretty well (despite me not liking the core theme). I like seeing the use of models - and yours are original. So, that's all good. Other than one startup message about a skin graphic that can't be found, it all seems to work well enough too.
