HOLLOW: Some guy learning to map by making a crappy megawad

Post by mrtaterz »

Video courtesy of Agent_Ash:

HOLLOW is just the name because I thought it was cool. It is also a project about going into a church and finding demons there and then ending up in some eldritch Hellscape. idk it just ended up being that way I guess.
If you download this expect it to not be that great, but I love Doom and have +5000 hours in Doom mods and maps alone just like everybody else here and know what I like about Doom maps and fighting demons, so I feel like I have something of value to contribute here in some form.

As of now there are 6 maps. I do not mind contributions, or people trying to contact me on Discord. I am available on the ZDoom Discord and friendly enough! I will stop rambling now, have a Download link:

I have given this project a name and have created a second map, Maw of Madness, as well as refined the first map, Temple of Behemoth. I hope you guys enjoy!

Friendly advice: if this is your first project, don't make a megawad. You'll only do yourself a disservice. Trust me, I learned this the hard way.

Pretty good for a first project. Maybe I should start mapping. But yeah if they say don't do a megawad first, then make it a smaller project.

I found it rather difficult tbh, but I'm a noob.

Haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I'd echo the advice of others: start with a smaller episode of maps to get a feel of how things work. Once you've honed your skills, go back and make your 32 map magnum opus. :)

The point of this project (at least to me) is to kind of show my progression as a mapper and show how I can improve over time solely by reading manuals, watching the occasional YouTube video when I get stuck on something I don't understand, and just mapping.

I do agree, it is an undertaking, but I'm a crazy person with crazy ideas and like to challenge myself. Not every map is going to be good, I know this, but I feel like I have two decent maps already and I want to keep going with this project and see where it takes me. Who knows if it'll even get finished? If I'm satisfied with a 9-level episode and decide to scale back, it'll be because I get bored.

Oh yes, MAP01 isn't even the same MAP01 as when I first uploaded this project. I plan on improving maps over time as well along with making new ones! :D

Making doors is the most frustrating thing for a first timer. I literally want to die every time I have to make a new door and have to go into linedef mode.

UPDATE!
This one is going to be a weird one because I haven't added any new maps, rather improved or did bug-fixing for old ones.
  • Certain maps have been given additional monsters for Ultra-Violence! difficulty.
I have properly tuned some maps for Hurt Me Plenty difficulty and lower now.
MAP04 has been expanded and should last longer. Yay! More demon slaying!
MAP01 had a bug in the secret Soulsphere room where the linedef to enter it wasn't pegged properly.
Certain enemies have been made undeafened in MAP02.
Cooperative spawns for monsters have been added on MAP01 and MAP02.
Deathmatch is ready for MAP01, MAP02, and MAP03.
Custom music has been added to MAP01 and MAP04.

UPDATE!
  • Various bugfixes to MAP01
Balance and spawn changes to MAP02 as well as an additional room!
MAP05 has been added! It is a rendition of Quake 1's E1M1 Slipgate Complex
    Quake in fear.
