[WIP] Virus - Episode 1 "Shareware Release"

Post by Phobus »

EDIT: Updated Links

Episode 1 and the Training map are now done.

Here's the link to the page: http://www.phobus.servegame.com/doom/ph_virus.html
Here's the direct d/l link: http://www.phobus.servegame.com/doom/ph_virus.zip (warning, large-ish zip file)

And here's a bit of info:

Has MAP00 (The Training Map), MAP000 (basically a skip map to get a bit more from the Training map), MAP01->MAP08 (the main levels), MAP09 (the secret level) and MAP10 (The end cutscene type thingy).
Features music for MAP00 and MAP000, music for MAP01-MAP04, music for MAP05-MAP08 and misc music, all from vgmusic.com
Has the full set of episode 1 resources, (monsters and all)
Has a background.txt file to give you more info on the world and things within it
Has 2 player co-op support for Episode 1
Has 4 difficulty modes implemented
HUD is a little more streamlined than before (I removed the "Ammo:" part from the left side in the end)
Weapons now fire directly at the crosshair
Fly Down is fully supported now (I recommend button Q myself)
Has PAR times for every map except MAP10

-----------------------------------
Spoiler: old stuff
Disclaimer: When I'm done, it'll look weird, and there will probably be a lot of people who think I've gotten lazy with the artwork or whatever. Whilst that is partly true, I've found that this is the only way I can do a lot of sprite work and actually carry the motivation to finish it. The effort is going into the use of the resources more than anything else, so even if it looks crappy to you, it might be worth a look-in, for something different.

So, is this going to end up being some sort of mini-TC or something? :P

I wish I could come up with a reply in that style...

But:

Pics are worthless without content! :P

@BP: In effect... yes, I suppose.

@Ben2k9: There's a game called Virus? :?

Suppose it would make sense... can't be all that original an idea.

Just as an update of sorts, I've actually managed to get everything I've made so far to work (my decorate knowledge is VERY touch and go), and after having messed around with the colours and stuff a bit, I've worked out a way the mapping could be done. Basically, light areas can have different textures for different faces, whilst darker areas can use floor textures on the walls and that sort of thing, because of the added contrast the darkness provides. Yay for experimentation! I think I'll sort out the hud in a quick test map, and then get some screenshots of what I have so far so I don't get owned by anymore smily parties. :P

Yup. I played it first on the Amiga.

no but it looks cool as shit. Have always been a big fan of c64 / c128 / amiga platforms. Guess i'm just retro-nerdy like that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hired_Guns

Interesting note - DMA also did the first (two?) Grand Theft Autos.

no not that one (however i have played that one), it was basically "Descent in your PC!" and had a gimmick of using your desktop items as stuff, you flew round destroying Viruses and stuff, it came out in about 2000 or so

This one's a similar concept to Virus: The Game, but plays much much better in my opinion: FP-FS

@bagheadspidey: Yes they did indeed make the first two GTA games, and GTA London.

@Ben2k9: This isn't so much Descent in your PC as Descent in my own made up world, which I've decided happens to be a computerised existance (hence the fact that you can fly, but where you can go is limited by what actually exists, even if it looks like there's a sky.

And now, some screenshots of my test map (mapping ideas, my scripted HUD and some things shown off):
Spoiler: the screens
So there we are, HUD is functional, and most of the resources are done. Next up is another monster. :)
