Could there be a flag in the soundinfo to not do pitch variations on a sound regardless of the choice in "sound options"
it sounds really strange when you play a wad with voiceovers (eg massmouth) and they sound all weired (weirder than they already sound)

The SNDINFO in ZDoom.wad uses $pitchshiftrange X to set an overall value for shifting sounds. Then it lists several sounds (in the Hexen section) using $pitchshift <Sound> 0, presumably to disable shifting for that particular sound. I'm kind of taking a stab here, but you can try it and see if it works.
