Not an expert, but I don't think that's possible, or if it is, it wouldn't turn out as expected.
I think a better take would be doing something similar to what Quake 2 did but with sprites instead of models. Have a bunch of damaged enemy frames and have them loaded once the enemy's health drops to a certain point/when shot, or something.
