Notice for Kappes Buur's Tutorials

Postby Kappes Buur » Wed Aug 05, 2020 8:45 pm

After several years of publishing my tutorials I just learned that my ISP will suspend free website service because of aging hardware and instead refers me to their paid for website service.

Which means that anyone clicking on any of my tutorials will be forwarded to this message

Spoiler:

I guess their coffers are not yet full enough.

Ugh, yeah that happened to me back in '17 with Shaw. (though I don't think Shaw even has a paid web host option, at least they didn't offer me one with their notices)

Neocities is a really nice webhost, though you'll need a paid subscription to host zip files and whatnot.

Should probably consider immortalizing the tutorials on the ZDoom wiki itself.

How big of files are we talking about? Might be able to host them on DRD Team, or even ZDoom.org itself.

That's IMO the best option, but of course it does mean relinquishing control over the content as other wiki members can edit, rename, delete, etc.

In total all tutorials are ca 180 MB, which includes the text, images and example pwads.

Spoiler:

Hosting them on one of those sites would be great, however there are three obstacles:

1. translating from html to Wiki markup
2. uploading images
3. uploading example pwads

Another suggestion would be that I do the translation and then send the tutorial to Administration to be added, for me to avoid items 2 and 3 which I know are finicky.

That would be no problem if extra editing would improve the tutorials.

So, all in all, if the tutorials could be hosted here, then I would be willing to learn the process of converting the files. But it would take some time to finish the process of migration.

Rachael already offered to cover for it, but if need be, ill gladly hostly them on my FTP server (Which is, ironically, also DRD Team and also done by Rachael)

Consider also DoomWorld who has oodles of old legacy pages still up and running. I am sure that you can give it a good shot contacting them, considering your veteran status there + the fact that you are, in my eyes an unofficial community staple in terms of helping out.

Or I could just do the same deal as I did for Red, you just upload your things via SFTP and you're good to go.

That would be an offer few can refuse.

Could work well for Kappes's tutorials really. They are great resources and it would be quite terrible if they disappear.

Rachael generously offered a new home for my tutorials. They can be found here.

Now I am in the process of uploading as I review each of the old ones and generating
new ones, albeit slowly. :)

Where step by step tutorials with screenshots are too cumbersome and possibly confusing
I record them as videos located on Youtube.

A useful resource such as this should never be allowed to go homeless. :)

Fantastic news, Kappes :) Glad it is now semi-permanently etched in stone now :)
