if gzdoom has it's own demos that can't be viewed with the original game and the demos with vanila maps can't be viewed in gzdoom, why doesn't gzdoom use it's own extension for it?
I mean naming the demo files .gzd instead of .lmp
would avoid a little bit of confusion I think

Re: about gzdoom's demo lump's
The problem is GZDooM(or ZDooM-based)'s demo format(its demo format still based on the vanilla DooM) just too unreliable, as the engine keep changed it's core codes and adding features, so not only vanilla demo just unplayable(the engine just changed to unable to play them anymore), and even GZDooM's own demos will not playable on next release versions(even one/more of newer of dev. builds), so it just waste the time for a feature that keep changes everyday.
Also, GZDooM isn't focused on demo recording and playing, it just works, but nothing more, and developers won't spend much time for a new demo format, they would like developing more new modding features for sure.

oh god the apostrophes
.lmp just means lump, so it's kind of the default extension for lumps that aren't in a standard format.
