GZDoom 3.1.0 hud scale confusion

Post by moodeR »

Hi, I recently updated GZDoom from 2.2.0 to 3.1.0 and I have noticed that hud scale behavior has been changed. In 2.2.0 when you run GZDoom without any config file (first time) it'll default to scale messages, status bar and console to fullscreen resolution, so no matter what resolution you might set the game, it'll always tries to scale them to look as close as possible to vanilla Doom which is a good thing.

Now on 3.1.0 when you run GZDoom without config file (fist time) it does not do that anymore and one should go to hud scale setting sub menu to set everything oneself. Also there is no "Scale to fullscreen" option for Messages and console.

So, it I want to scale the massages to fullscreen I should set a value manually, 3 for 1024x768 for example. both console and messages have "scale to fullscreen" option in 2.2.0 and they are both on by default:

That aside, I have also encountered a problem in Death Foretold in GZDoom 3.1.0:

D4T's automap in GZDoom 2.2.0:

D4T's automap in GZDoom 3.1.0:

As you can see GZDoom 3.1.0 won't scale D4T's automap text no matter what the settings are. So, what gives? IMO, the previous behavior was better, it defaults to scale to fullscreen and it also gives the option to do so. 3.1.0 neither does it by default nor gives you an option to do it.

The old behavior was completely broken and only worked in a few very specific situations. Especially with larger screens it was totally lacking any usable middle ground.
It's obvious that the change may not match everybody's perfect setting but no matter how you do it, someone will always lose. The default was chosen as the best overall compromise.
