Crap like this is why I use ZoneAlarm instead of the internal firewall.

Aw crap. I use the M$ firewall and my dad won't change to Zonealarm or any other firewall. It "causes too many problems". Like hell, he just can't leave alone stuff he doesn't know anything about.

That's a pretty stupid article, because:

1) the firewall opens the ports automatically if your file sharing is already enabled previously
2) the ports are only opened to your local /24
3) windows default file sharing rules states other people must have an account on your machine
4) only local access is allowed to accounts with blank passwords, no over-the-network access
5) password cracking protection staggers then locks out accounts with failed password attempts until a successful login can be performed locally
6) guest account is disabled by default
7) Administrator account on Home computers have no password and therefore can't be accessed remotely in any case

So in other words, nothing's wrong unless you make it wrong. Then it's your fault.

Standard recommended action when any malicious code has run with administrative level privileges is a full wipe of the target system in question.

Changing what the firewall indicator says is the least of your worries at that point.
