I've found that timidity does work but not with the aforementioned SB AWE32 sound font. I have tried a few that resemble the SB AWE32 run under Win 98SE, but none really come close. The closest so far are (in no intended order):

XG_Sound_Set__from_SoundMAX_DLSbyXG_
MT32 GS 2.51
AweROMGM (http://ftp.filekeeper.org/download/4res ... eROMGM.sf2
SGM-V2.01 (This one comes closest but the drums sound like guns)

All can be found as stated elsewhere in this forum (unless otherwise stated) : http://www3.telus.net/anapan8/oldscardemu.htm

They really are not the same. The start of the music of Map05 sounded like the key of F on a double bass and then a similar instrument if the string was strummed and then the elasticity was let loose so as to play a declining note, almost like an ominous echo in the distance. It was so vivid. I still can't believe that they were able to do that over 10 years ago while midi on today's sound cards are so awful. The only way I'll hear that again is to get an old working Pentium (II) with the old ISA slots and a working SB AWE32 card. Too much work to make it worthwhile.

I never had any luck getting the AWE32 "soundfont" working on non-creative cards. I think Creative did something weird with the default AWE32 "support" on their later sound cards. I suspect that unlike normal soundfonts, the "AWE Default" soundfont was also pulling samples (or something) from ROM somewhere off the ISA cards in addition to the soundbank. I remember when I opened it in Creative's own soundbank editor it wouldn't show something like 120 of the instruments. It would say they didn't exist, or would grey it out as ROM Sample which I never saw with any other soundfont. It gave me the impression that the soundfont manager had to "simulate" the ROM sample "special case" somehow. So it's possible that the default awe32 "soundfont" is actually a mix of hardcoded sounds from the SoundFont manger app + the sbk.

Maybe they did this to try and obscure the "magic sauce" or something? But I'm completely guessing, and there's a good chance I'm totally wrong on this.

If you have Realtek based audio, this might be something to try, but I'm unsure if anyone has "modded" the "SoundFont Bank Manager" to run on Realtek yet.

I haven't looked into the modded creative apps extensively, but I recall there being multiple people trying to do it (or maybe it was just people stealing credit) so even if that thread doesn't have it, don't give up hope. Daniel_K might have something?

Fluidsynth with SGM v2.01 sounds just awesome. Doom 1, Doom 2 of course, and I listened also to the Hell Revealed 2 midis with this ... and... woah! So nice. Especially Maps like 24, 23 and so on <3

I would change fluid_gain from 0.5 to 1 though to have a more reasonable volume.

edit: I tested now Valiant too and there gain of 1 seems a bit too loud - for doom 1 and 2 midis it is perfect though and HR 2 too.

But thats not why I did the edit: The edit is because:

Previously I did the midis into the program Synthfont and made FLACs out of it with the same soundfont and did it into a musicwad for each pwad with own midis - simply because I was not in the mood before to check how to implement SGM into GZDoom itself.

But now I'm really wondering:

The title music of Valiant sounds the guitar(?) really really strange compared to Synthfont. Synthfont's sound was waaaay better at this. Also the other valiant songs sound else compared to synthfont (the some I listened to not worse though, just else, but title music how said sounds much worse)

This is because of Fluidsynth vs Synthfont, right? So I would have to continue using Synthfont for this for Valiant I guess. But why are there so heavy differences? Can you explain?

I could imagine that Synthfont is better on the doom 1 & doom 2 songs too, but if I remember right I couldnt get so much success, because if I remember right it just uses all instruments of every soundcard which sounded often strange.
Nope it works too.

Also:
SGM-V2.01 (This one comes closest but the drums sound like guns)
Not for me. So it lets me assume that timidity again would sound completely else :S
