Making a new tree from scratch that fits in with the originals has been annoying. Only 6 more variants to do to finish the tree props for the first forest level.

Now with DX11 Tessellation and advanced PhysX physics!
Only on Software mode. On EGA monitors. In the dark. When you're on anything which tells you "not for human consumption" on the label.

I really wish I had time to actually make shading look better, but my progress on the actual maps requires me to finish these. They look tolerable in game.

It's pretty cool. (Just looks like the trees are pruned  )

Detail on the leaves is a bit too sharp in that context, maybe.

It's less that and more the fact that all the leaves are the same brightness, which makes it look flat. Darken some and brighten others and it'll give it the illusion of being more 3D, since realistically the leaves in the background are harder to see. :P

Still, not bad. It's nice n' sharp. :)

This is very nice, but there is alot in it to improve 3D-wise and shading-wise.

The tree looks to detailed, too flat, too uniform....etc.

A tree shouldn't be a solid ball, some parts you ought OT be able to see into the inside, which should have dark shadows. Made some small edit by adding some.

The shape is a bit too round. You could add more flaying around the edges to make it look more layered rather than a solid sphere.

What about making it more oval-shaped, like this:

(The top was from a Blood tree, BTW.)

@Eriance: very nice! That's exactly what I was meaning to refer to -- good to have a visual reference & a fix. :)

Nice edit, I'll try to do something similar post an update with all of the new trees soon as I am getting closer to a new release (if only I would stop adding areas that the player won't go to yet).

I think its best, as always in art, to use a reference. Studying life makes art more believable. If you wish to sprite trees, I suggest first picking a species and learn how the foliage pattern develop first; before dedicating yourself to the task of the actual artwork.

These looks pretty good. I recommend adding shadows of the foliage on the trunk also. (with small holes of light to represent the holes in the foliage).
