Hmm... i may try to make it more Doom friendly later. Right now i'm doing the Hudson Pulse Rifle from Colonial Marines, but this is a lot more on par with the classic design.

Thanks for sharing it!

I just made some attempts (in this one i just changed the color palette to the Doom's one):

In my opinion, the sprite is too big to be fitted with doomguy's hand! But i tested with Caleb's hand as well, and i think it's not that bad  :

Hmm... no offense here, but i think this sprite was damned from start and there's little one can do to save it. I tried to shade this train wreck in line with what i think someone like Blox would do, but thanks to my lack of experience and expertise in shading i'm not really satisfied with the results. Maybe someone more skilled than me can make a better job drawing above the lines of the weapon itself, i did all i could.

Dude. So here's a couple weapon frames from Doom that show the side of the weapon in more detail:
Image
Notice how they don't look as if they've been airbrushed like a cover model?

The source image is closer to Doom's style than that... attempt. Lighting contrast is the main thing it needs, which you may be able to handle with a little brightness/contrast adjustment and some accenting by hand. If possible, it might be wise to re-render the gun at a lower resolution with more pronounced lighting. Certainly don't go manic with the smudge tool until it looks entirely fake.

The first step to making a Doom-style sprite is to rid yourself of the notion that Doom has a single cohesive style. The whole game is a mashup of hand-drawn and photo-sourced images. The weapons themselves are made from photos of toys. A realistic, high-detail model is as close as you'll get to that without a photography setup of your own.

I think you focused so much in the Doom style part that you missed what i had explicitly said in my second phrase: i tried to replicate Blox style of shading, which consists in high contrast and lots of airbrushes, not Doom style. That's what i was aiming in my"... attempt".

But anyway, you're right with the vanilla sprites you posted, but notice how even they have much better light and shadows and are overall a lot more detailed than the AK, which in turn is completely flat, washed out and grey - and as noticed by ElectricPulse, fits a lot better with Build Engine style. I still maintain that the base sprite looks bad, and agree that he should probably render it again with better lightning conditions.

EDIT - And here's an attempt to mimic Doom style:

Second attempt to doomify the AK:

And as the front sight indicates that the AK might be a Norinco Type 56, i tried to add the spike-style bayonet (i used a darker background because the bayonet would camouflage with the color of the forum):

Here is the raw sprite:

I focussed on the original question:

All you did was call it hopeless and not even offer a solution. :?

I must have noticed, because mentioned it immediately after.

That's better.

Spoiler: To put it more bluntly

That's because they are both from the Alien Trilogy game, so they will naturally blend together. And nice improvement to the Ak! Looks a lot better now! Congrats!

And those do look like AK-74s!

Anyways, nice work my friend!
