I'm not sure if this belongs in this thread, since it's kind of a sprite?

It's a little test for effects and giving things a 3D-style look. I'll probably use something similar for a mod I have in mind, though likely I'll use different textures.

I actually didn't feel it was necessary to rip the other explosion sprites for the wraith fireball though I could have. It is a decent unique kind of effect.

I have a regular use of MISL explosion from smooth doom going on, in fact a multi-layered explosion (it spawns a dummy concentrated slower playing explosion, on top of the regular MISL blast). So I felt I had a more impressive effect going on already.

I also use this really gutty stout explosion sound effect from Quake 4 (grenade explosion?) for the rocket impacts so the larger multi-layered explosion effect with that feels pretty intimidating.

But I expanded the use of MISL to just about any red fireball and ive made most of the fireballs red (baron hands aren't recolored yet though). I just modulate the speed and scale of it depending on the strength of the fireball.

I stuck the White/Blue plasma ball on the Caco and gave it a recolored blueish MISL shell which works okay but its not quite ideal.

--Edit: Now that you mention it I think the wraith explosion effect would work just fine for this, but itll have to be recolored and im not sure ive got the patience to recolor-twice (its going directly to lightning blue, not doom-red). But maybe it will be recolored back to red after that for you folks.

The first explosion frame listed is kinda like a more game-ish looking "POP!" comic book kinda effect. Which also reminded me of some sprite explosions from zelda/minish cap. Only lasts 2 tics but after that it can divert to some other impact effect.

BTSX palette

Speaking Of Which I made a new optimized palette that I want to use, posted it in How Do I but it may be abit morose for people to respond to it there.

Any pointers on how I can implement it without having to make a wad with all the basic graphics in it? Id rather not convert all the vanilla graphics to PNG internal just to make them palette independent.

You have a ward with all the basic graphics in it.

No, there's no way to avoid that.

well I'm assuming you'd use the standard plasma exp as that's the intended use...

I spoke abit too soon. I forgot how many frames were in that pop, just 5 or 6, and they recolored excellently without any manual editing needed. So that was like 5 minutes.

Sure and not a problem, just remember these came from hexen yknow.

I will say this - if you are using BTSX they will display as seen, though I dont know about how they will do in the regular doom palette because I just dont use it anymore.
