Well, i'm not really a sprite artist but i used your prototype as a base to see what i think could work.

* the praetor suit (and most of 2016's designs) are "overdetailed" but even some fanart and even some official id stuff take some priorities in what details matter first, so i thought a red dot could work, since it (maybe) wouldn't even be obscured by the player's weapon.
* the shoulder cannon could just give the player the impression on how the inventory works in general (as in throw grenades while still being able to shoot from the main weapons) and i placed it in the left side of the doomguy
* since you were worried about D3 representation, i thought the shoes/legs could be detailed to represent that.
* the red dot in the back is again, a reference to Doom 2's cover box art.

meanwhile, the details you put up like the D64 antenna are good enough and what i'm suggesting are just ideas i just simply threw away

Went through my collection and put together a Duke-esque weapon set:

The assault rifle looking thing is an automatic shotgun and the Lame Duke Ripper should represent some kind of missile launcher. The supressed SMG would replace the Supershotgun maybe? Missing some kind of BFG though...

So here's a sprite I worked on over the weekend.
This is very loosely based on the Doom Alpha/Beta guns, the muzzle and the grenade launcher is probably the most recognizable parts, everything else basically got painted over. The carry handle, the stock, the sights, pickup, and the grenade, these are all painted by hand. The muzzle flashes are based on Shadow Warrior's Riot Gun flashes, the grenade flash is just the Doom rocket explosion.

Use how you feel like, just leave credit.

I should be finishing stuff I still didn't made hands for and not starting new sprites... somebody can find this useful, buttstock attack for shotgun.
