How do I get MUS in ZDoom!?

Postby Bashe » Mon Nov 10, 2003 11:34 am

I can't get MUS in ZDoom. There's that Mus2Midi feature that makes it different. How do I get the original MUS in ZDoom?

I NEED IT!!!

Take it slooo...
The "original mus" means the mus files in the original id games. And that is already in Zdoom, as long as the main wad of the game runs (and it does with Zdoom's latest release)
What precisely are you trying to do?

I'm trying to make the music in ZDoom sound like MUSes rather than MIDIs.

No, no, no!!! MUS descended from MIDI, and MUS was used in Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, and Hexen. The music that is outputted in ZDoom is MIDI, but I want it to be MUS. If you want to know what MUS sounds like, play DOS Doom. It doesn't sound the same as MIDI.

It so does for me! :)
That's just what I meant. And, in that case, I have no idea what can be done. Sorry.

Mmmm, I think he means the music card setting in setup. He's confused...

Zdoom doesn't play a mus as midi, it IS playing the mus. What sound card do you have? It probobly sounds differant cus in dos you are using the sound blaster as the music sorce but in windows (or Zdoom, which runs from windows) it defaults to general midi. I have no problem cus I have a good sound card, but older SB cards have poor synthesizers built in, they don't even have drum sounds that sound remotely like drum sounds.

If your wondering how to get Zdoom to use soundblaster as your midi then I don't know... It appears that doom has it's own inbuilt synthesizer or something (that genmidi lump). I don't know completely cus even in Dos doom I set my sound card to general midi, but the bottom line is that Zdoom is playing the mus files, nomatter what you think...

Zdoom plays the Doom MUS using the windows midi output (I believe). So it will sound like playing a midi through windows would.

However, you can go into the sound options - advanced options - and play around with the opl settings to emulate ye olde music sound if you like.

There is no "advanced option" or "sound option" in ZDoom. Where would I find this "Mus2Midi.cpp?"

Sounds like you are not using a recent version of zdoom. Get 52.cab from the downloads page.

THANK YOU BIFF!!! I now have MUS in ZDoom.

But, I have another problem. My colors in ZDoom are really messed up. All the colors are like inverted and weird stuff. How do I fix that?

MUS is nothing more than a stripped-down standard MIDI file. What you are referring to as "MUS" is actually the FM synthesis used by most old sound cards to play music. Had you played Doom with a Gravis Ultrasound instead of a SoundBlaster (or compatible), you would have heard real instruments.

What if you play in a window or alt-tab away and back or pick up an item or turn on the DirectDraw palette hack?
