Solace Dreams - the best unplayable mod I've tried

Postby IDKrisis » Wed Mar 25, 2020 3:31 pm

I've recently been playing a Doom TC called Solace Dreams in which you play as a school girl who has recently died, only to be trapped in some otherworldly place. It's a survival horror mod with voxel graphics and some tricky boss battles. It's well made and very atmospheric, but with just one problem. One level is unplayable.

The level in question resembles a theatre. Not long after entering, I find that performance slows to a crawl. I should note that the computer I am using is a very high-end machine bought only a few weeks ago at great expense, so there must be something seriously wrong to cause such an incredible amount of slowdown, achieving about 1 frame every 10 seconds. Does anyone know of a solution to this?

Solace Dreams is an intensive standalone relying on dynamic lights and animated voxels. So i have a few questions upfront:

- Which GZDoom version are you running?
- Which version of Solace Dreams (if any) are you running?
- What are your specs (of the computter)?
- In which level (or even more precise, which section) does the slow down concur?

Solace Dreams comes packaged with a specific version of GZDoom: 2.3.2. I have not found a way to make it work with later versions.

The version of Solace Dreams is 1.6.6.

My computer specs: OS Windows 10
32GB RAM
Intel Core i9-9900KF CPU 3.60 GHz/3.60GHz processor
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER graphics card

The level is map09: Theatre. The slowdown starts as soon as I enter and gets worse the more voxels I can see. I don't think this is a coincidence.

It just starts up fine when running the main zip with -file.
Yes, that map is a slideshow. The reason becomes very apparent when enabling render profiling: The number of sprites is constantly growing at a rapid pace and it doesn't take long until it overtaxes the engine. There seems to be some mapping error here.^

Witness the first two lines - these utterly kill the engine and they keep growing.

Best inform the author of this problem, this looks like a modding error - that call count is crazy. Probably some script is spawning those actors into the map repeatedly by mistake.
