If the real life graphics rips would REALLY look fugly, I'd simply prefer to choose another engine, or a port, which does not use any kind of palettes.
wildweasel wrote:Marty's comment was more in line with trying to make the graphics look more consistent with ones that already exist. Photographed hands wouldn't look nearly the same as Doomguy's iconic arm hair, for one.
Doom has a certain style associated with it, and unless you're doing a total conversion of some kind or replacing a majority of the graphics, it's best to try to fit within that style. I don't mean that I palette-rape my images, I mean I take into consideration that Doom has a 256 color palette, so my awesome gun, which looks great in meat-space, probably will look out of place with it's 10 billion colors.

This is important with arm graphics and the like as well. I try to make whatever arm/hand images I'm taking from meat-space look as close to Doomguy's arms when I'm editing them.

I feel that putting this in may have to do with the discussion:
Image
The Doom Alpha arms did not feature hair for obvious reasons: they were photographed in typical lighting conditions. Hair is too thin to be visible on small sprites like these, let alone show up on white-guy arms in a regular photograph, so they have to be edited on. The stock-holding hand on the bottom right was too small for me to get any visible hair on without losing contrast or looking downright cartoony. I used the Press Beta shotgun arm as a guide... sorta. Ignore the weapon sections for now, if you are intolerant of XWE-ripped alpha sprites (with color 255 edited out).

The hair looks pretty good, but there actually doesn't grow very much hair on the underside of your arm. I don't know if you have a hairy arm but if you look at a hairy arm, there still isn't hair on the underside of the arm.

I'd suggest removing some of the hair where the thick vains go on the underside.

Gentlemen.

Yeah, I threw in a few hand sheets from this topic and edited some hands from assorted weapons. I did a few edits myself, such as the atrocious shield and the shitty Strife edit. A few sprites may have stray pixels around the edges, but nonetheless, it's here. Enjoy.

Made an attempt to improve Blox's hand anatomy-wise.

I think that removing the hair on the left side should do it better.

Not really. That arm is from the Press Beta Pistol. It shows even more how hairy Doomguy's arms are.

Are there press-release hands on there? All of them?

However, the wrist is rotated farther than in those shots, making the bone/tendon detail look wrong.

Also, it appears to have been (badly) filtered. Eww.

Whatever it is you're applying, I'd suggest resizing it to half the size. Those big holes don't look good.

-- Actually, it seems like you're applying a hairy arm to it. Let's see..
